Good morning all. Sorry for the early am brain teaser but trying to get together some $$$ to pay my taxes tomorrow.
I have a rusty 70 Ford van I'm stripping of anything useful before sending to the recycler. I had planned to pull the rear thinking it might be useful for a future project but when I got a good look at it I began to wonder if it was worth messing with.
I'm not very knowledgeable about Ford rears and this one doesn't look like any other 8" or 9" that I've got.
Is this thing something I should keep or send down the road?
    Thanks

That looks like a 9 inch to me, a shot from the back would tell the story though..
That bolt, partially obstructed by the input shaft housing is usually a dead giveaway that it is a 9 inch...Definitely worth keeping...

  3. In the van that will be a nine but it will be wicked wide. That can be fixed & i will be 5x5.5 bp.

looks to be a 9in... I have 1 also.. the axle tubes are straight on my van housing..this makes it easy to cut it down to narrow..this is the reason I am going to keep it.. I have found some housings step down or taper.. the straight tubes are easy..

    It's 61 1/2" backing plate to plate.
If it's a 9" I'll give it a go and add it to my stash.:D
    Thanks.

Wide 9 inch with PROBABLY a 3.50 gear, maybe 31 spline...............keep it to flip in pieces.

  10. Might it be a 9 3/8 inch? Did they come in vans? I have one of them in a 70 Lincoln.

Some of those vans had a 9" with an offset chunk. Narrow it to the same length as the short side, use a short side axle, and presto, cheap narrowed rear end!
