my 53 flat motor with a joe hunt distributor mechanical advance
seems to like 10 degrees initial timing. is this normal with
a isky 400 junior camshaft...??? stand to correct me but will
the more timing i put into it make the engine run hotter?

More timing normally makes for cooler running. But, to much will get you into detonation and that's bad. F/Hs in general do not use too much advance ,mid 20's total is in the ball park.

10 degrees doesn't sound out of line, but as mentioned you need to know how much advance is in the distributor. With 10 deg initial, you'll want about 12 - 14 crank degrees in the distributor.
