If you have a united rental around, check it out... They smoked uhaul in my area.. Rented an enclosed cargo from them a while back and I checked on a car trailer a few weeks ago. It was $90 from Friday afternoon - Monday AM.. Ended up using a buddies for $50.. Good Luck...
Does U-haul have a winch available for their trailers? What do you guys do when you don't have enough manpower and a non-op vehicle to load?
When you call U Haul ask about a one way from where you are picking it the car it maybe less then not always but some time they need that trailer down to where you are going drop it off at. there is one more thing that you can do to pay less call other rent a truck place get them to tell how much tell them what U haul wants then go back to U haul and tell them the other place as it for less they just may lower the cost I have done it before when I started looking they wanted $1800 for truck and trailer when I got done I got it for $1400 and more time a few min on a phone may just save some cash!!
One time when we were renting a U Haul trailer to take a non running car to the upholstery shop we went to Harbor Freight and bought on of their 12 volt winches that was on sale for $ 99.00. We fabbed up a quick bracket to go over the front crossmember of the trailer and used our 12 volt jump box to supply 12 volts. It worked amazingly well and the jump box had enough reserve power to get us through the loading. It was so much easier than using a come a long as we only had to push a button. Don
To stop sway, use this CURT Sway Control Kit #17200. Works perfect towing a 18ft traler hauling a 4000 lb load Got mine for $49.00 including shipping' amzon .com http://www.curtmfg.com/part/17200 .
Actually, U-hauls site says that their car hauler trailer is rated for a 5390 pound load. Max trailer and load about 7500 pounds.
i just hauled a 57' from ny to baltimore with a uhaul trailer. It does the job and you can do one way rentals... if you can put up with the rental paperwork at the counter, its a good option. it took me 45min to return mine.... i'm still baffled on what took so long.lol
On a rental or borrowed trailer, you don't find that out until you reach the speed that it wanders. I pulled a friends trailer when his truck was broken down. It pulled fine at 55 on a 2 lane road. We got on the interstate and drove 20 miles at 70 when the trailer stated to wander slightly. I slowed down as it gradually got worse. I had to use both lanes and the shoulders to keep the trailer in line until I could get it slowed down enough. I was lucky that nobody was alongside when it started.
If you own a trailer, you can do many things to make certain that it tracks straight. If you borrow or rent, you get what you get. Most trailers are short so the load can't be moved to shift the center of gravity to get more tongue weight.
C'mon guy's, it ain't rocket science! I rent from U-Haul whenever I need a transport trailer, it's quick and easy. I don't lie about what I am hauling or what I'm hauling it with. If your worried that your tow vehicle is too light then maybe you shoudn't be hauling anything at all. Last month I bought a '57 Chevrolet, 40 miles north of Kansas City, and hauled it with my '04 Z71 without any problems. I live 60 miles east of Ft. Smith and made the round in 13 hours, you do the math... All it takes is a steady hand and some common sense.......
A couple things about renting from U-Haul (or anybody else). First is insurance. Your credit card insurance will only cover a rental car, not a truck and probably not a trailer. I know this from first hand experience when we rented a truck for work. It got wrecked (long story) and we had to pay for it. An expensive lesson that I like to pass on to everyone. Buy the insurance! Second is tires. Don't count on U-Haul replacing a tire for free. My son bumped a curb with the dually tire on a rental truck and tore the sidewall. U-Haul dispatched a guy to change the tire, but we paid for the damaged tire. At least they pro-rated for wear and the tire was pretty well used up so it wasn't worth much.
Damn nice Civic 1oldtimer! -EM I used u haul a bunch of years ago and it was $49 a day but you need to tell them it's something light, like a civic or I used a '65 mustang 6 cyl. Towed with a '94 1/2 ton 385 miles <fieldset class="fieldset"><legend>Attached Thumbnails</legend> </fieldset>
Never said I shouldn't be. We paid when our guy wrecked the truck and we paid when my kid popped a tire. No issues, no argument at all. We damaged it and we paid for it. After reading a few posts that specifically mention tires and insurance, I thought it would be good to offer some advice. I have my own trailer now and it never gets loaned!
Every u-haul trailer I have rented has a big sticker on it saying not to exceed 55. Never had a problem with it swaying. Jim
I am not far from ya, I have a trailer but the tires bother me but if you need tie downs or chains let me know.
I just used one of those the other day to go to LSRU. I was pretty impressed by the surge brakes; it made the trailer pretty easy to predict when braking. Felt funny though if you suddenly let off the towing vehicle's brakes though.
True story,.... My Best bud decided to build his first car trailer in the 70's,... We found plans, brought the steel and axles back to his house. And laid it out on the garage floor,... Squared it up and the "weld-a-thon" was on,... positioned the suspension mounts and finalized them,.. same with the tongue.... Painted it and put it all together,.... stood back and admired our handy work,.... Finally one of us got a lead on a project car. Time to try out the new "Stretcher" as we called it,.... So we hook it up and off we go. We noticed a little side to side movement, but nothing to bad. When we get there we buy the said project car ( I think it was a 40 Coupe) load it up and "Chain bind" it down ( remember those ?)..... Anyway as we start back, the trailer starts shifting side to side shaking the back of the truck, so we took it really slow all the way back. Wondering what the heck was wrong with it ! When we step back and look at the trailer it hits us both at the same time. (If memory serves me right) The placement of the axles should be 60/40 toward the rear. This newly finished, freshly painted trailer's axles were 40/60 ! Apparently when it was upside down during construction, We welded the tongue to the wrong end..... We cut it loose, flipped it to the other end welded it back together and hit it with some spray bomb,... and it's been doing duty for the last 35 years,.. and pulls straight as an arrow... ! We agreed never to tell anyone about this,... so this is just between you and me.
I've hauled several cars with the exact truck you have 03 GMC 2500HD 8.1 L gas motor. One was about 900 miles and all were with Uhaul trailers and every one went great. On the longest haul across NY state on their freeways I set the cruise at 69 mph, turned on the air conditioning and listened to tunes the whole trip. I won't buy a trailer when I can get a Uhaul for under $70/day insurance and tax included.
Amen, I used to lend my custom built trailer out to friends and it always came back filthy or damaged. I sold that one, waited a few years and bought another one. Now I tell everyone its only half mine and my partner does not want to lend it to anyone. Never lend out a trailer, they do not appreciate it. When I did not have one I went to uhaul
just for grins I went to u hauls web site pluged in your basic info you didnt say where in ky you were picking up the truck so I threw in louisville as a starting point using your info with a 8500 pound hitch rating one way is $103.00 yea its more than 55 from a local place but at 4 bucks a gallon it will more than make up for it in fuel economy http://www.uhaul.com/Reservations/RatesTowing.aspx good luck moving
When I moved back to Wisconsin from Indiana, I rented a box van from U-Haul. I put my 47 Studebaker truck in the back. i found a place that had a loading dock and just drove it it. Packed all my other earthly goods around it and away I went. It worked great. I didn't tell U-Haul, of course. I have since rented their car trailers and they worked well. In their agreement it specifies what car you will be hauling and ONLY that car is covered. Tom
No, the U Haul transporter (that is what U Haul calls their car trailers) is rated for over 5,000 pounds. That Merc is nowhere near that. Don
I've used then a few times too. The only problem we ever had was the book they used didn't have a listing for a stripped 66 Bronco shell and rolling chassis with no running gear.
