I need to know the distance between the windshield stanchions where the pivots are, on the stanchions not the windshield frame cones. I have the windshield dimensions but need this measurement. Any help would be appreciated, Ted
Thanks, Mike. I'm working on a Repro steel body & the stanchions won't even fit on the mounts provided and I have to do some modifying, now I have a number to shoot for.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us Mine are on a 'gl*** body. What I did was fit the posts to the windshield so that the gap was even between the inside of the post and the windshield. Then I made the body fit that dimension. Remember, these are 80 year old bodies and most people won't know, or care that the fit is precise as long as it is strong, and it looks right. Hope that helps. Mike
I appreciate your input, the body came with mounts welded onto the tops of the hinge posts but no reinforcement bar between them plus the left & right didn't look quite the same. I want it to look more like a stock cab so I picked up a reinforcement bar and when I set it between the mounts there is a gap at each end, no big deal just add thin filler strips, then tried to install my used stanchions and found the mounts are so wide front to back the stanchions won't even fit over them so now I have to cut the mounts up also. I figured if I had the measurement between the pivots I could at least get in the ballpark, I was holding off buying the windshield frame because the 8BA is at the machine shop and I want to make sure I have enough $$ to get it back. I like your setup, are you planning on painting the stanchions body color? My plan is to go Semi-gloss Black with very little chrome other than the windshield frame, headlights, mirrors and maybe some engine dress-up pieces.
Yeah, stanchions will be blue, and the frame will be powder coated a nickle color. My windshield frame is from Speedway, do you want measures from it?
If you have them handy, that may be a help. Also are your stanchions stock height or chopped? The powder coating sounds kinda neat, I hadn't considered that, may give it a more vintage look and I hate cleanin' chrome.
Mine is a 2" chop. It's 41 1/2" from outside to outside wide x 11" at the narrowest point above the cowl. The rubber Gasket that fits in the slot in the bottom of the windshield is 3/4". The cones that the frame swivels on make up the distance. A lot of guys like to rake their stanchions back, I like them straight up. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to paint the headlights, or leave them chrome. I intend to do all the front suspension in that "nickle" finish, and I'm worried that the chrome headlights will clash with that finish that to me looks a lot like polished aluminum. Also, painted headlights give me another blank canvas for the striper! Would you leave the headlight rings chrome if you painted the buckets? Thanks, Mike
Mike, thanks for the info. I agree on not laying the stanchions back, I think it ruins their lines and makes it look like somebody bent them out of shape, I do like the adjustable type similar to the 30-31 that are being made but really can't justify the cost. If you paint the headlight then maybe you could do the rims in the same nickle finish which would tie them in with the other pieces. I know it's hard to see but when I built the '35 Chevy in my avatar I painted the headlight buckets the same as the car and did the rims in black and I like the look. I also had the headlight stanchions, outside door handles, vent window frames & the division bars between them and the door gl*** powdercoated black, the only chrome on the car is the trim on the grille and the mirrors.
