i put the refurbished rear springs together for clarence the other day. after i got the first set together i got the camera out and took pictures of the 2nd one. this worked so much better than using a vise i wondered why i'd never heard of it before. i layed the spring leaves on the floor (with some two by fours down first to keep the spring edges aligned) and pulled the leaves together with a woodworkers' pipe vise. i put in an extra bolt to keep the leaves aligned while compressing. it just slid out as i tightened the clamp. here are pix:
Nice trick! What model car was this for? I've not done a lot of spring work, but the very few I worked with weren't sprung this tightly. .

When me and sixcarb, put the rear back in his 32 we re-greased the spring and rebuilt it on the rear, tightening with c-clamps and following with the center bolt, but i think this method looks safer, the leaves would go out sideways if something failed rather than up. Good tech.
Good tech, thats the way I have done mine. Might even want to use two bar clamps to compress safety wise.
