I have searched all the seat threads and no one has mentioned one with an adjustable back. Has anyone modified a caravan seat to make it adjustable?
You mean the kind with the turn wheel on the side like in Volvos that changes the angle of the dangle of the seat back? If so, No. But I've contemplated getting two, or three front bucket seats that do have the adjustable back and stripping the foam and just widening one of them with springs and stuff from the other seat(s) They usually have a rod attached to the turn knob that attaches right and left hinge mechanisms, that would have to be spliced and widened with just the driver's side having the knob in the end.
A late '80s Honda Aerodeck rear bench is a perfect fit in a Model A. Here it is pictured below - you can see from this it is one piece (not seperate backrest & squab like most). I could not find any other car that had this set-up and I looked long and hard. It is a standard back seat and not a rear facing occasional seat. The "ears" which fit into the wheel arches are just channel section which can easily be removed to narrow the bench even further. It is made from 20mm round tube and looks exactly like a Glide bench when the cover is removed. The two back rests adjust for rake separately and the reach adjustment is built into the bench with the control in the centre of the lower edge of the squab. I paid about £15 sterling for this one. They were also made in leather - usually black. This tweed seat is unmarked - it is just the poor quality of the digitial image that makes it look scruffy.
I used the 3rd seat from a Caravan. They say the second is a little narrower than the third but I got a good deal on a 3rd seat from a swap meet so i bought it. Ayway, I removed the cover, padding and springs and cut 4 inches out of the middle and welded back together, I snipped the excess springs from the SIDE so it would'nt ruin the setup. The best thing about the seat is it is a fully adjustable back, the only downside is the adjustment lever is on the p***enger side of the car, but since its a Model A you can reach it no problem, if I remember correctly my seat measures around 32" wide.
Forgot to mention, I removed the base and used a slider set-up from a 61 chevy so its adjustable front to back as well as the reclining back
In my 32' roadster I used a bench seat from a 67-72 Chev 1/2 ton pickup. The back tilts forward so with a little ingenuity you could make an adjuster. I narrowed the seat to the desired width and it worked out good and was comfortable. The upper corners on the seat back and the front corners on the base have nice curvatures as well. Good Luck, Sam
My friend is doing a 34 Ford pickup for a guy. They stuck what they think is a Ford Aerostar middle seat in it. The back adjusts, but that doesn't mean much in a pickup cab that is limited fore and aft. They did use the true middle seat, the two p***enger model. Keep in mind that what some call the middle seat is actually the rear three p***enger seat moved forward and the two p***enger seat stored elsewhere. Makes for more luggage room and all that and you can still haul six p***engers.
The 3rd seat that I used lays forward completly flat on the seat and will recline about 45 degrees back.
