Delorean, is that better? Are you going to make fun of me for a little misspelling? Sorry the only perfect man died 2000 years ago. And actually a customer of mine pointed it out to me after he searched my name on the internet . This person is also a good friend and knows a lot about what was going on the last few months before I left Jersey. Its kinda humeruous how people like to fill in the blanks and make assumptions for themselves, as if they really knew.

Joe, thank you for coming on here and laying the facts out. While I understand your defensiveness, no assumptions were made as far as the truthfulness of the claims in relation to you. In fact, quite the opposite. As far as I can tell you've always had a sterling reputation in NJ and the facts seemed quite out of character. Thanks for setting the record straight

  4. well i pride myself on honesty when im selling something i describe it as close to its EXACT condition as possible most time my description of just how big a pos it is turns people away and i dont try to sell a turd for gold prices i usually offer whatever it is alot cheaper then most people would

i know guys that will put an outragously high price on something and sell it within days i put what i would feel good about paying for it and i end up keeping it or scrapping it .....i dont get people

I know this is not a Hamb approved car but it is a decent story. Recently there was a 1969 Cougar XR7 advertised on Craigslist near my home. I called and talked to the guy, he stated it was an S code (390 4v) car, which is pretty rare. I asked specific questions IE: power windows, A/C, is the heater and A/C box there, tilt steering column and several other questions. He stated it has been sittin a while, be he remembers driving in it and said yes to all of those questions, so ( hooked up my car trailer picked up a buddy (who I hadn't seen in a while) gased up and started out on the 3 hour ride. Well, make a long story short, no power windows, no tilt steering column, heater box missing. So pretty annoyed at the time spent and the $100 in gas I hit the road before I hit him. Well on the way back I said to my buddy, all things considered, it was great to see u and get to catch up and that I had spent more time and money hangin at a bar tryin to catch up with friends only to wake up the next day with a hangover and had forgotten half the conversation. That's my positive spin, on what could have been s total waste of time.

My brother scott was looking for a convert chevelle, lemans or cutlass. He found a lemans on ebay and started asking the guy questions. The biggest thing he wanted to know was what the floors where like. The guy tells him they are very nice.He makes a bid on it and wins then barrows my trailer, drives 4 1/2 hours to get this thing. He calls me and tells me the floors are junk and wants to know what i think. The guy has enough balls to say well they are nice for as old as the car is.So I tell him if he still wants the car to offer the guy less money or just leave it there. So he offers him less and the guy says ok and scott asks to look at the title so the guy hands it to him and scott starts checking the numbers and the guy blows up at him for not trusting him. I would have left it there but he brought it home anyways. At least the vin was right.

  8. I always look for the ads that say what the car is, then start the description with the deficits and not the assets. It's possible there's an honest person connected to the ad.

  9. I had found a 1941 Buick Series 50 Sedan on line. The guy wanted $9,500 for the car. I asked him to send me photos via e-mail. He sent several photos and I noticed that the car had a for sale sign in the window and the asking price was $4,900. I asked how old the photos were and he said that they were recent. I asked why there was a $5,000 mark up. He said that I wasn't supposed to see those photos (the photos were taken by the previous owner). The seller then offered the car to me for $7,900, which I refused. I did not want to participate in his car flipping business.

Here is one for the other side of the coin. My son sold a 89 Mustang ( I know , not HAMB Friendly) on E bay. Told the guy it had 5 or 6 door dings & 105,000 miles & slight rust on the deck lid inner edge. "Mr Buyer " shows up a day late. We put the car on the lift , he went over it with a fine tooth comb. Decides we mis-represented the car. We asked how? He says " you said 5 or 6 door dings...it's got 7.... You said 105,000 miles ......it's got 106,009...... You said slight rust ...it's got TWO spots an inch long each. We just closed the garage door.... cause we didn't want to be in the newspaper.

  14. Damn! I can't believe some of the stories on this thread. It's inconceivable to me that some folks will lie and cheat like that. Man, I want people to be happy with anything they buy from me and I make every effort to under promise and over deliver.

On the other side, I've never once been burned but I've walked away from a few. Mostly local stuff. I guess I would be pretty pissed if I drove several hours. I came close to it a couple of years ago when I was looking at a car in Oregon. Fortunately, one of our HAMB brothers went to check the car out for me and took lots of pictures. It saved me from buying a rusted out pig. Come to think of it, I did get burned on ebay once but it was just for a part that was misrepresented. Guy was a real a-hole but I was only out $65. Live and learn. The best policy is to check everything out yourself or have someone who knows what their doing check it out for you, if you are too far away.

One of the things that really pisses me off in an ad is: "Really good condition for it's age." WTF is that supposed to mean!? Sounds like a sneaky disclaimer to me. You can bet that if I see that in an ad, I ain't looking and I ain't buying.

As far as Joe Sulpy - I don't know the man. But whether this thread is three years old or not, I think he did right in protecting his reputation.

I understand this is an old thread but it's a subject that will never die. I recently sold an OT car to a gent from calif. I sent high quality digital pics of the car from every angle, including underneath. I told him everything possible about the car, absolutely honestly. He wired $10,500 to my bank acct. About 7 days later, a transporter arrived to pick up the car. He received the car 4 days later and called to say it exceeded his expectations, as it was better than described. Happy buyer, happy seller, very simple!

I had this 55 chevy hood with a grumpy lump scoop on it and the scoop was pop riveted on and had some body filler over the rivets. Hood dident have any rust on it but the body filler was cracking cause it was 25 years old and the fiberglass scoop was in good shape. Sent the guy pics of the body filler cracking and the bottom side of the hood even told him some one drilled holes for hood pins. He drives 2 hours to look at the hood and says its a total POS. And I said how? He said it has holes drilled in it and the body filler was cracking off. I asked if he looked at the pics and he said no. He then said I should give it to him to cover his fuel costs since I lied to him. I only wanted 50 bucks for the damn hood too. I told him tough shit cause I told ya what it looked like and even sent pics of what it looked like. So the guy left all pissed off, I gave my buddy the hood for his 55 chevy gasser and he was happy to have it. He just put new body filler over the rivets and painted it.

I saw an ad in Suffolk County for a 66 Corvette. Called the seller who described it as good body, runs good, all original. The price was a little strong but not unreasonable. I got cash from the bank and drove the hour to get there. The engine was hanging from a come-along in the tree. The body was painted with a cheap enamel paint job that looked an inch thick. The interior was rugged. I was not happy and expressed that. The guy said that the engine will run good once he gets it back in. Not sure why I bothered but I checked the block casting number and it was an 020 block (307). I said he was crazy asking that kind of money was leaving and he said make him an offer. I decided not to tell what I was thinking and left.

Sellers have been misrepresenting cars for as long as there have been cars, I am always prepaired for that. I found a listing on cl for a 66 Impala, the pics looked perfect, the post had only been up for a couple of hours when I saw it so I called. The guy had just got back to Oregon from picking up his grandmother and her car from Arizona. She was going to live with him and no longer needed the Impala. The car was very clean, no rust, original paint, ran great, the guy had all of the right answers. I told him I wanted it, told him I was 6 hours away and that I would be there the next morning to pick it up at 10;00am. He agreed to the time, I liked the $1000 he was asking for it, all was good.

I loaded my trailer on my 75 F250 4x4 with it's 11 mpg 520ci and headed to Oregon. After 6 hours of thinking about how sweet this car looked I got to the guys house 30 min early, no car visable. Went to the door, knocked, he answered, I introduced myself, he says "I just sold it" I reminded him through clenched teeth that we had a 10am appointment and that I had just drove 6 hrs to get there to keep the appointment and all he could say was " it sucks to be you" and shut the door. I had an instantainious reaction to the sound of the door shutting, I managed to control 95% of my bodily reaction but my right foot was just too far gone. I suppose that door stopped flying eventually.

I did see the car at a gas station just before I-5. The car was as sweet as the pics, the guy that bought it was a nice guy and understandably stoked. I didn't say a word as to why I was there.

my favorite car selling story was when I listed a 72 Ford long bed truck for sale on Craigs list. I stated the motor, transmission and rear end were taken out for use in another truck. I said it had a 49 ford truck rear end in it so it is still a roller.

I was asking $100 or $200.00... cheap. this guy calls and asks why it does not run...., so I ask if he read the ad where it says the motor and trans were removed. then he starts going off on me because it would cost so much at DMV to register and I had some balls asking so much. dude was pissed. I don't know what the heck was wrong with that guy.

so being honest in your listing does no good if people don't read them.

My son has sold several cars on eBay. He tells everyone before they buy it if they win the bid and come to get it and for any reason they don't want it, they can walk away and not pay a cent. No hard feelings, no negative feedback (back when the seller could give negative feedback) He has never had anyone walk away. Being honest is the best thing anyone can say about you. My wife says I could never be a successful car salesman as I point out all of the bad things. But I would rather tell them then let them find out for themselves.

I went to check out a 60 Chevy Impala Sport Coupe in Austin last year. Dude was asking 4K. I had a pretty good idea it was going to be a POS before I got there. His ad was all caps and shouty "THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THIS!!!! THESE ARE GETTING HARD TO FIND! I AM NOT TAKING LOWBALL OFFERS!!!!!!!!"... seemed like he had been getting some crap.

I pull up and I can tell this thing is a hunk before I am within 50ft, but since I made an appointment...I knock on the door. Mom goes and gets the '25 year old gangsta' and he shows me the car. I swear there was so much rust on this thing, it had to have been sitting in a field near the beach.

The highlight was opening the trunk to this horrible creeeeeeaaaaak (didn't need a key of course). The guy says "needs a little oil" -it was creaking because the rusted mass of crap that used to be the hinges was just bending. I glance at the gaping holes in the trunk bridged by Bondo. The trunk lid which has mostly been sculpted out of Bondo weighs like 75lbs. I look him right in the eye and politely say "it looks like a little more work than I am willing to take on -thanks for your time." I drop the trunk and it hovers an inch and a half over the lip. I just walk off, and let him try to "close" his trunk.

I swear, next time I am going to look at a questionable car I am bringing the video camera -I will say I am checking it out for a friend, then I will bait some good comments -video gold!

Tell the truth, I really think he thought his car was all that.
