I am building a '32 Roadster Gasser and want rear fenders. Problem is, most of the period gassers ran standard width rear ends, so even with fenders, the tires were outside the fender edges (that is the look I want). My 9" is narrowed, and even with 16x31x16.50 tires, I suspect a stardard '32 fender is gonna be wider than I want. Before I order stock (glass) '32 fenders and start cutting them up, I wondered if earlier models might have the same radius/arch as the '32 and be more narrow???? Anyone know? Thanks.
Rather than try to adapt thinner fenders, which would look "unusual", why not just get a wider 9" Ford housing? Late '70's-early '80's pickup rearends are readily available and they're the widest ones Ford made.
remember the pinion offset on the rear...short drive shaft,, drag car period gassers had 9-10 inch not 16-33ws...might want too figure if it will fit on a trailer wt the wire setup...if you want correct get a quickchange....race gear 5 minutes streeet gear, and all the cool you can handle
Good points. A couple of issues: I should have made it clear it is a gasser STYLE, so 16.50 tires vs 7" cheaters is a good observation for nostalgia is a great observation, but won't change. Even with the roll bars, I doubt many legit passes will be made. Plus, as you can see from the attached, there isn't a small amount of time invested in the rear end, such that I would consider changing it. So, I am still in a position of knowing the relationship of fender shape and size by previous year. Thanks for the interest.
If you mean earlier as in Model A? Those A fenders are wider. Other brand cars; some do have skinnier fenders, but it would be close to impossible to know which one would have the same profile/radius....as well as needing to be a coupe/roadster fender..and those are harder to get on other makes of cars.
Here is how I finished the fender issue I asked about in 2010. For those who contributed, I thought you might want to see how it turned out. Used 15" trailer fenders welded together. Not quite authentic, but close enough for me. Thanks to those who gave me their opinion back then.
