Dads...the meaning of life

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by chuck fahr, Jul 8, 2005.

  1. My best Memories are of me being a young one sitting in the back of my dads chevelle, handing him tools... Helping him pass his ASE master tech tests and The look on his face when I rebuilt my first carb.... I thank him everyday for those times..

  2. What a great thread. My step dad was never supportive of my addiction to cars when I was a teenager. probably even less tolerant today. My son has gone everywhere with me in the past 17years. His love of old cars runs very deep. We lwt him buy his first car when he was only 15. A 55 Desoto. He bought the car with his own money and with the technical help coming from me and some of my very best friends he now has a car he can be proud of. His cars name is 'Priscilla' and is still the first girl in his life.
We travel all over the midwest together, always he and I, normally following each other and sometimes Mom bringing up the rear in the old 57 truck.
High school sports are good for kids, and there are lots of other social things kids can do, i can't think of anything better than cars to help a father and son bond.
I was away last week and he took my old S-10 pickup and decided that he was going to fix it up. Put lowering blocks on the back, torched the front springs and began doing all the bodywork to paint it flat black w/some scallops. Did i get pissed, hell no, it's just an ol truck. Got to let those creative juices flow somewhere...
Next time you see a red and white '55 Desoto with a flat black '57 Chevy truck and flat copper colored '51 Merc behind, stop by and say hey.....

  4. What a cool thread...I read all of the posts and how cool it is to see the HAMB family and thier own.

I have 2 daughters. One 14, and other 3. The 3 year old is my first own to create (if you dig :) ) She is the 'gearhead' of the two. Ever since my youngest could talk, she would be my "approval factor" of all of the cars I bring home. "Yes daddy; I love it" or "Ewwww!"

Every wrench I turn she is there; either in the drivers seat turning the steering wheel, or under the car asking, "Why you doing that?"

I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. When she first came into this world, I was so afraid of what to expect. My life would come to a screeching halt...but weirdly, the opposite happend.

I have on my arm tatoo'ed her name; Chloe Leilani Taylor and in Japaneese the words; Love and Strenght. Her 'love' gives me 'strength' to continue w/ life not matter how hard it ever gets.

She is my life, my soul, my everything...Without her, my life would mean nothing.

I love her w/ all of my heart...and proud to be her daddy.

I just got back from Columbus Goodguys. I spent the weekend with my 40 year old son. It seem like only a couple of years ago he was out in the shop with me, jacking up his wagon, oiling the wheels on his tricycle, and handing me wrenches when I was under a car. He has a son of his own now and just finished his own shop. he is going throught the '69 Z-28 Camaro I gave him for his 16th birthday for the second time so his son will be involved this time. Thanks Patrick, it was a fun weekend. I love you, DAD

My Dad was a mean f#*ker. He Used to restore Mustanges and T-birds. When I was young he'd try to show me somthing and I'd do it wrong and he'd get pissed and chase me off. The wors't was when I scrached a 68 mustange with my bike. He beat the sh#t out of me for that.......
    Poor Bastard.....
Now I'm a father, she's 20 months old and I can't see how anyone could be so angry.... There is nothing in the world that I love more than my little Evelyn and I cant wait to get my 54 kid friendly so we can hit cruise night toghter...

I've put a splash of paint on each of my spanners so that when I start my build, I can say to my 3yr old (and his sister who arrives in 5 wks), "pass me the blue one, pass me the green one" etc etc.

A SPLASH of paint on your SPANNERS................shoot, yer gonna have to learn to speak first!:D

Actually, that's a WONDERFUL idea. Wished I would have thought of it BEFORE I taught mine to read.........would have been less fustrating!

I have 2, a part time 4 y/o girl and a full time 5 month old boy, she digs anything with wheels and stole one of my 1/18th cars to add to her toy box (well she didn't steal it but did always want to play with it) don't get to spend all that much time together with cars but we do have a good time and sometime get out in the car, worse thing with the little one is now he is in a bigger seat I will have to drill yet another hole in the Olds to be able to put the teather strap his new seat needs in !! before he was able to just be strapped in the front.
With dads, mine was a full on old railway guy, mum would send us off to the vintage railway he was instrumental in setting up with him for the day as kids, hell it was a great place out in the country with streams and stuff and of course machinery and grease and generally old stuff, he was into steam and quit being an engine driver for the railways when they went to diesel, never said much to me about the old cars I dragged home but at his funeral one of his work mates was saying he was often talking about mine or my bro's cars so I guess we both appreciated weach others thing even with it being different from ours, hes been gon for 10 years and I miss him heaps, seems being a dad and having the kids makes you appreciate all that.

It's great to see how many people can relate to this thread. 16 years ago at the ripe old age of 19 I dragged a 53 Customline 4 door home to the surprise/ammusement of my old man. These are not the most common car in Oz and it was something I had wanted to do since I was a kid. Dad was into big British cars and to him, the Fords were inferior in their day - to each his own. Yet, he put his mechanical skills to good use and helped me do a full resto over a 2 year period. He was so proud of the job I did and we went on a lot of runs in it, but before too long I realized what a bunch of pedantic pricks restorers could be, so I lowered it, put on twice pipes, spinner caps, finned heads and a 2 pot manifold. He didn't talk to me for a week!

I now have great pleasure in showing him how low I can get my 53 Victoria when the air bags are dumped. We might have different taste, but he is the one who taught me how to hold a soldering iron, use a grinder and set a torque wrench. I hope I have the same mateship with my 18 month old son and I'll support him in anything he shows an interest in.............but I sure hope it's roddin'.:D

This jumps a little to the side but it's still family. Last night my 14 year old nephew was at my garage hanging out with my youngest son when I got home after a 13 hr day. We got to talking about his project, a 39 Chev PU. I told him about my plans to go to follow rodder Keith's in Sedalia for a metal meet. We got to talking about build options and mentioned Keith has a louver press. I offered to take his hood panels and have Keith louver them and it was like Xmas, his birthday and winning lotto all at the same time! Hope it works out and I can help him out on this. The rest of his build will be 250 straight six with a 5 sp tranny. Yea the future rodders are gonna be OK

I can't help but notice alot of us have girls- I guess they can look forward to the HAMB of the future when their first post gets 1000 hits:rolleyes:
I took my 10 year old to DFW for The St. Valentine's Day Massacre-he helped me sell art and charmed everybody with his good manners. Leans more to the art side than car side, but I'm building Jeepers Creepers for him, so he's learning.
My 2 year old daughter LOVES daddy's car-always wants to hang out in it or hang around when I work on it. She's pretty mechanically gifted :D

Wow, you guys are awesome. :) What a great thread, you all have some cool kids and it's good to know you love them. I'm gonna have some of my own someday (sooner rather than later) but for now all I have is this dog. I've had him since he was 8wks old, so does he count as my son? :D

He ain't too good with the 'handing daddy a screwdriver' thing but at least he doesn't shit inside the house. lol

  19. Being a relatively new dad, I thought I'd drag this classic thread out of the dust.

    Start 'em young! :)
