Is it burnouts? Dumping the clutch? I have Firestones 7:00x16 with a stock 200 hp y block in. 1900lb car. What should I look out for?

I disagree, I always found the finger picking much harder.

Don't dump the clutch. Let it slide. If It breaks loose so be it. Once your underway floor it.

  6. I would have to say burning it would be pretty hard on it!

I guess there are a few music lovers out there! So as far as keys go is there a better...hardened axle key? What do you recommend for torque numbers on axle nut? Should axle threads be lubed prior to tightening as this will affect torque readings?

Metallica songs will make your fingers bleed.

  14. Use new axle keys, lap the hubs/drums to the taper with valve grinding paste, torque to 200-220lbs but no more. Use Speedway, Tardel or anyones axle retainers in case an axle breaks. Dont dump the clutch, let 'er roll, then mash it.

I like the idea of lapping them in, i havent thought of that, otherwise, you hit the nail on the head. The other thing i'd add is reshim everything to make sure it's right, nothing grenades gears easier than if they dont have proper contact and give undue stress to teeth due to 60 years of wear

Hardened axle keys would negate their purpose as the weak link that saves the axle when they shear.
Kinda like a guy who puts a Grade 8 bolt in place of the shear pin on his tractors mower shaft. Blade hits stump.....drive gears shatter. Damage, hundreds of dollars.
With soft shear pin, blade hits stump, pin shears, driver replaces it and mows on.

You beat me to that good advice. I'll add that a little more tire pressure helps, too. Years of a Cyclone quickie with injected 327 and 4-speed Hydro led me to the belief that smokin' the tires was better than smokin' the rear end. I think that even a modified automatic is better than a stick in keeping it all together.

  22. When I was a teen, I kept axle keys in my trunk, along with everything else necessary to road side change 'em. Even with skinny 16s, I sheared them regularly in my '46 Ford coupe w/stock '53 Hemi. Never broke any other rear end parts though. It was always caused by the inertia of dumping the clutch.

Just remember that those rear-ends were designed for a 40hp motor with not much more torque, and they are 80+ years old. A little common sense goes a long ways...

If you want to dump the clutch, and do burnouts, smoke the tires, all that....then put a 9" under it.

I sheared three keys in a summer in my Av8 driving like an a-hole. When I didn't have any replacement keys, I sawed off a hardened screw driver (old roundy- round trick). Then I replaced my axle shortly after. Spider gears and ring and pinions are far more expensive than axle keys. I only admit this in public to spare you the expense;)

Retorque the axel nuts several times, for the first 100 miles or so...... I found they tend to loosen sometimes.
