Was at the local truck place here getting some hoses crimped. Saw Baldwin oil filters, new name to me , but figured they must be good if the truckers are using them. Anyone have any knowledge on these, are they known to be good/ bad ???? Also can anyone explain what an "anti drain back valve" in an oil filter does? Do I want one? Is it good or bad or?? Thanks
Years ago, when working in a shop building race motors it was all we used. The setup would withstand 100+psi oil pressure and not rupture the canister. Not too much of an issue when the motor was warmed up, it just got messy when cold. John
Sold them by the cases for years to our industrial customers. They had been using them for decades. They bought our WIX filters for the gas cars and pickups though.
The anti-drain back valve is the soft black rubber seen under the 8 - 10 small inlet holes. It's there to prevent the hot oil from draining from the filter back into the crank case when the engine is shut off. Then when the engine is restarted the filter is full and full oil pressure is maintained. Without it the oil would drain back then on restart the pump would have to refill the filter before oil was supplied to the engine. So yes it's necessary, especially when the filter is mounted on its side or upside down above the oil level. (I worked at Wix for 13 years)
I have had VERY good luck using the Baldwin filters.. I use them on my circle track race cars and more than very pleased.. The are a little pricey comparied to others buy dont cut corners well worth the money..
Will not use anything but Baldwin on our small block 360 Dodge race engines in our protucks we run on the circle track
Thanks for the answers guys. NZhotrod, thanks for the explanation, easy to understand, and thats good.
Baldwin makes good filters and they are the only mfg where I can find air filters for my 2x4 hailhead factory air cleaner.
Baldwin for years on all the off road yellow equipment, over the road trucks and also in the service trucks. Still run them in all my cars, cost more than the "F" filters that come apart but worth the extra.
I've been using WIX for 40 years, and Baldwin is just as good. The Top-2 filters in my opinion, all others ...leave on the shelf.
Baldwin is all I use in the rental equipment at work. Also use them on all my vehicles. I have never had any problems with them.turn
I used to work out of a locomotive shop. We're talking severe duty here. All they ever used were Baldwin & Wix, for both fluids & air. These units were never shut down. Run 24/7, except for monthly's and annual's. Got my vote.
I helped run a school bus fleet of 250 busses plus 200 other vehicles and equipment. Baldwin and Wix is all we used.
