What OE application had the GM 1 wire alt?

    I need the OE application for the GM 1 wire alt so I can tell the kid at the part store what to look it up for:rolleyes:......
     
  2. The one wire alternator wasn't OEM on anything. They're considered a marine or stationary power plant unit

    You will be better off with a traditional 3 wire. I'm sure others will chime in. do a search on here.

    Part number 80500 will get you a standard GM 63 amp 1 wire alternator

    I converted my 100 amp police alternator to a 1 wire. (it's on my 350 in my F100)
    I'm going to install another 3-wire diode plate, real tired of revving the mill to 2300 RPM to excite it!
    Don't know what all the "1-wire hoopla" is all about, leave it at 3! (actually, 2. The one gets shunted from the alternator 10 gauge, and the exciter is the second wire...)
    Use a Volt Meter! Not an Ammeter!
     
  10. they can be had at autozone, but in my 2.5 years of working there was asked once for one, and if I recall it was only mentioned once in a flyer when they first offered it. but it has a big orange sticker that says GM 1 wire on the box, so tell the kid to stop being lazy and go look, a quick search on google says DL7140M is the part number. so have em pull that up if its autozone.
     
  11. Yeah, I don't think there was any sarcasm at all ... the OP obviously is hoping someone will have some part numbers so he will be better prepared when he reaches the parts counter.

    I thought I had read the one-wire came on some trucks ... good that others have chimed in with actual numbers.

    Personally I don't understand the want/need for a one-wire. I have always run the 3-wire and find them very easy to wire up, very easy to find at a parts store, and there is no need to rev the engine in order to "excite" it (as someone else has mentioned).

    Good luck at the counter though ... (even with the part number:))

    you can use p7127se as the SE stands for self exciting and will be a one wire 63 amp GM alternator.

    It has long mystified me why anyone would want to run a one wire so that you get the least juice when you most need it - at idle and in traffic. I guess it's one of those triumphs of fashion and buzzwords over common sense engineering - just because it's 'the hot new thing' foisted on a gullible and uninformed public....

    Because it's easier to hook up 1 wire than to spend the few minutes figuring out where 3 wires go. Cuts down on their tech support call costs... :D Besides..."looks good" and "easy to install" are much more important these days then "works well"

    I have a one wire GM alternator in my 50 Chevy PU.It charges at idle with the lights on and charges the minute the engine is started,no need to rev it up.I bought it on Ebay 5 years ago.

    Mine also charges on start up, no revving. It is wired to a battery isolator which charges two batteries, and does so very well, even at idle.

    It's funny how guys ***** about other guys not knowing something that they themselves are apparently misinformed about. Nothing but keyboard commando's.

    I believe when the one wire alternator first appeared there was little charge at idle and you needed to rev the engine.In the last at least 5 years this has changed from my experience.Many guys also adapted them to old tractors with small diameter engine pulleys that din't turn the alt fast enough at idle.

    Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that now that the aftermarket has convinced everyone that they need a one-wire alternator, the wiring companies have come out with a $20 electronic module to operate the GEN light when you use a one-wire setup? :rolleyes:

    Of course, you get this for FREE if you use a less expensive three wire factory-style unit.
     
  26. I tend to agree with MAD Electrical. He seems to know his stuff and is not a "keyboard commando". If you're running a small pulley to exite at a lower RPM, then that ****er is screaming at high revs. I ride and post on the V8 motorcycle board. They all run single wire GM alternators and failures are very common. Much of it is probably due to cheap Chinese components. Some might be due to fundamental design issues. My question to them and to anyone is, "If one wire alternators are so great, why are they not industry standard?". Mine still works, but when it conks out I will replace it with a Delco Remy 3 wire

    Having been in the back room of a large parts store, I would ask for a part number or application too. When you are faced with a wall of alternators in similar boxes I'd too prefer to have a clue as to which column to start looking in.

    I feel for the guys on the parts counter. They deal with a lot of stupid during the day, usually from know it alls.
