I'm running a fairly new 350 Chev. I have been adding zinc additive to my Pennnzoil at oil change time because I'm running a flat tappet hydraulic cam and lifters, not roller. Other than amzoil zrod oil, what other oil is non roller cam friendly? BILL RINALDI

25 w 50 Penzoil Highest zinc content on the market.
It is racing oil and if you read the
label on back, it is not recommended
for "regular" engine use. Newer cars
    don't like zinc.

Bill, most any racing oil, we run valvoline 20/50, but others are fine. Brad Penn is the old kendall green oil. They bought the refinery from kendall, the name was sold to somebody else. Penn uses the same old excellent base stock. Joe Gibbs products are superb, contact joe rhynne, he sells it locally. None are cheap. Pep boys here quit selling racing oil.I can get you a decent price on valvoline products, cousin owns an oil change.

I use Kendall exclusively in any performance engine that I've ever had. The 20W-50 in street cars, straight 50 in the stock cars.

Is 20w50 to thick for a daily driver? That's the only wt. I can find in the valvoline racing oil locally.

Valvoline VR1 is what I've been running. I also ran 20w50 in a couple cars all the time and never had problems.

I heard Rotella has scaled back their zinc and other slick-um content.

Above 40* you should be ok... any colder it may be good in a garage a bit lower. I always used 10W-40 in the winter, got caught with my pants down too often with the 20W-50 when it dropped unexpectedly.

If your buyin your Pennzoil from an engine builder, it has the highest level a zink out there. If your getting it from a parts store shelf, then no.... Pennzoil has a specific line of oils only available to better engine builders. In Cleveland 1 distributer is Gellner Engineering.

I use Castrol HD 30 in my fat tappet race engines. Never have any significant wear after the season.... I use castrol in eveerything I own that isnt New. New stuff ( alluminum engine) get Mobile 1 or Dexos.

20/50 Valvoline racing oil (VR-1). It's usually the easiest one to find at the chain stores like Pep Boys and Autozone

CJ is scaled back. I've seen oil marked SM/CJ so apparently to be SM compliant SJ must not have any higher levels of zinc than SM. "Accel" brand 10W-40 SF oil is available once again @ Wal-Mart for easy availability on the road.
