I just purchased an 49 F6 from my inlaws and im a little confused as to what motor it is.To the best of my familys knowledge the truck has its original motor and the truck only has 24,000 miles(known to be accurate, family bought truck from wife of original owner). The cylinder heads have 8BA cast in them ,front dizzy, water outlets on front of heads, bolt on bell housing/clutch cover.from my research here all points to it being an 8BA.
Now where its confusing me - while reading another thread there was an excerpt from Vanpeltsales.com and it stated that a truck motor should have an 8RT motor and that starting in 49 with the 8BA the heads used bolts to hold them on yet mine has studs and nuts.So do i have possibly an early 49 that got studs instead of bolts(maybe using up the last of the old inventory) and wouldn't an f6 have the truck motor instead of the car/light truck motor?
I just want to know what i have to be able to get the correct parts for it. I want to pull the flathead and use it in my A coupe if its not cracked.

In an F6 or smaller, its an 8 BA. The big truck had a Lincoln engine. An 8 BA with 24,000 on it should run for a long time yet if it can be turned over.

Lots of chatter about truck engines on the flathead forums. There do seem to be some trucks that had 8BA's from the factory, instead of the "proper" 8RT. The studs on yours are a puzzle, tho, I've never heard of that personally. With time, memories fade, it is entirely possible someone just isn't remembering a head swap. Studs may have been part of that swap. But it's also possible there was a temporary shortage of "correct" parts at a particular ***embly plant and they did what they needed to, to keep the lines rolling.

Is the intake manifold cast with 8RT on it?

Count yourself lucky, 8BA heads are considered better than 8RT heads, which tend to have lower compression ratios. Other than the heads, the only differences are the oil pan and pickup, water pumps are different between cars and trucks, carb should have a manual throttle.

8BA or 8RT with also be cast on the fan carrier bracket. Trucks had the wide fan belt. I think the 4 blade fan is for a truck. The 3 blade fan is for a car.

thank you 19fordy it has a wide belt just like the water pumps and it is a 4 blade

zurekbrau- not sure this is my first real dealings with a flathead, maybe another f-6 if you could locate one. it you see the hose coming off the upper right side of the port that goes to the actuator for the 2 speed rear if that helps you any.also it shouldnt be to hard to make one if it couldn't be found

zurekbrau: That outlet port is for the vacuum wipers.

  18. Either engine is a great choice.Manufacturers were swapping in all kinds of odd parts.
