I'm doing a project for my college tech 391 cl*** Industrial quality control. I'm doing my project on mechanics having down time between jobs because they are waiting for parts from auto parts stores. I have searched all over the web finding nothing and have finally turned to the one place i know i i can get some feed back and a little information. Any responses would be appreciated websites, personal experiences, ext. Also mechanics can you post on average how long you wait for deliveries. This is not against delivery drivers by any mean i know you have to go to many place like ware houses and other shops. I worked at an auto parts store for 4 years and know what goes on its just a place to get some references for my Project thank you.

There is no down time at our shop. If you have to wait for something you jump right on another project. Nobody sits around waiting for a delivery at any shop I know of.

I understand that's what we do too. I was just wondering how long your deliveries take thanks for your reply.

Walk around to shops in your area and ask. Research - not everything is on the web. If you want to be an IE worth a dang you better learn to get out into the shop and observe. 25+ years as Manufacturing Engineer speaking

Delivery times vary during the day. If I ask, I can have it almost immediately. Otherwise it's going out on the next truck. Most of the time it takes about an hour from ordering.

Use to be a prob but one day I went to the parts store that i use and i spend about 12k a month with. Told the manager to get in my truck showed him that it was a 16 min trip so if it took him more then 30 min or more id have a new parts store :D
    They got a faster truck

I never have to wait more than an hour or two for my parts. The two parts houses we deal with most often keep track of the parts we use the most, and stock them in our shop. So we don't even need to call for our top 50 or so basic parts.

We wait longest for dealer only parts. And even they deliver within two hours.

I honestly spend more time waiting for my idiot boss to get customer approval and order the parts than I do waiting for the parts places to deliver.

It takes a lot longer for a customer to approve buying a $100 part to fix their $30k car than it does for the parts to show up..

  9. delivery yea
in the rurual you take your own truck and go get the parts from the store usually takes about 15 min
dealerships have to go pick up their own
the longest wait is the store in getting it shipped in the next afternoon
auto repair has changed seince the 1960's , tailpipes were $1.50 and most parts were in stock then:eek:

way to many models now , back then a chev 150 210 and bel air all took the same mechanical parts:p

there are a few things that vary delivery times. near me i have the option of a bunch of parts store, a few good , a couple bad, and one thats ugly. if you call around to find a part and time is a factor i might choose a part from one of the faster delivery stores despite being more expensive. most of the stuff i deal with, speed doesn't matter and i will wait for a part if it has to be shuttled from the bigger store's warehouse. time of day matters too, if you call right before rush hour your going to wait. one of the parts stores near me have a dozen or so delivery guys, so they get the part there fast, but if the part is wrong [amazing how often] it doubles the delivery time.
