v8-60 37-40

    Can anyone tell me if there are any differences between the 1937 and 1940 V8-60? Are all parts interchangeable? Thanks

    I know the early blocks had sheetmetal sides, beyond that...

    If you don't get answers here, I would try Fordbarn.

    The first two years had what they call..tin side bocks.. The block had tin plates welded to it on each side instead of being all one piece castings. The welds look cool but most have rust issues here. The last year is the best if i'm not mistaken. There are two styles of water pumps, early and late and the front engine mount is different for the respective pumps. There may be other differances but i don't know, i' sure someone else will chime in.

    There were a lot of big differences, starting with a longer crank for 1940. The history of the 60 is pretty complicated even without the '35-6 Euro version, and interchange is complicated. There is a fairly good book on them.

    Thanks, Bruce. You have helped me before with my distributor. My tin side 37 puked on Friday, leaking water inside and outside. Wondering if my heads (Eddie Meyer) and intake ( Edelbrock) will still fit. Regards, Marv

    I think heads will interchange on all flavors of US 60's

    One of the big desirable features of the 40 is bigger main bearing journals.
    This is why the 40 is almost exclusively used for race engines.
    The V8 Simca that came out in the mid 50's was very similar to the Ford.
    It didn't take us long to figure how easy it was to put a Simca crank in a Ford to
    get a longer stroke...I forget how much stroke increase but we ran 167 ci Ford in our midget.

    So, taking this a little bit farther, if the crank is a little longer, does that mean the cam needs to be a little longer, too?

    http://www.willimvintageengines.com/ Book on 60...not really a comprehensive how-to, but lots of info from a racer. I'd need to check, but I think only one cam length. Crank lengthening was to support '40 fan, and they took advantage of change to beefitup.
    There are several versions of most pieces, and I don't like to talk about the '35-6 version because that scares people. Scared me, when I saw one.
    '37 was big sales year, sales dropped rapidly to nearly nothing in 1940, so you take what you can find...

  12. You can off set grind a '40 crank to '39 rod journal size and gain 1/8" stroke.

    tin side blocks are 37 only,37 also had taper seated water pumps 38 and later were flat seated.heads are the same,intakes too,generator is smaller on the 60hp flatty
