Can Anyone ID this wheel? 14" no markings, no predrilled spot in center for caps, looks aluminum not magnesium.
No many wheels back then used a center cap like that...the cap goes on from the front, and uses a thin plate and screw to secure it from the back... American used that type on their 200s's, and their T-70's, and T-70R's, but that was it, all other American's used the 5-point front screw on cap... Cragar had a wheel like the one you have posted, and used that style cap also...off the top of my head, I can't remember any of the other's...
It looks like a near perfect clone of the low production American that was made around 69/71. T-70, even the spoke shape, which is kinda like a propeller base, where it goes from a sharp V to a round root. I have a pair of the real ones on a 69 Dart, 14x6 Repro caps were on ebay, when I looked some years back EDIT: See... Earl agrees on them "looking" "like" a real T-70
Its always nice when someone wants a rim ID to also show the back ... narrows the possibilites deown a bit
Remembered it? HA! C'mon Scott, I loved that POS.....if it had been a 59, I'd still own it. I bought those wheels at a swap, I think, in Alabama(?)...price was right, and I'm pretty sure they are marked inside like Randy suggests The only Torq Thrust prettier than a T70 is a T70R, IMHO
I just meant that if they're American T-70's, they'll say American on them...the other manufacturer's wheels that resemble those, (5-spokes with the push-on style cap), won't.
I had some similar looking wheels back then that the center caps had rubber "O" rings inside to hold them on and no screw holes. I want to say that they were Rocket wheels with a big R on the cap. The caps were just pressed on with your palm. All aluminum wheels It's been 40 years so don't hold me to it but that is my recollection. The big difference was the lack of the 5 center cap holes.
I had heard that the molds for the T-70s were p***ed around a couple of different manufacturers - Supreme being one, but I have never had any proof of that - this is why I ask....
Although not the original question but it does bring up the Superior Supermag...Having a one piece construction and similar look, but just only close to the original T70 and not nearly the backspace. Another comparison could be the Cragar GT , however a 2 piece construction but having a similar type center cap as the American. And there is the import 2 piece knockoff of that with an open casting on back. Also worth mentioning are the the Foose "Nitrous" wheels.Just kidding, I mantain there aint nothin but the real thing...I dig all 5 spokes...
applaince made a clone to the torque thrust t-70 with no name on back side , as in earlyer post american racing would be ont the back side ot the real macoy , also superior supermags are close but they have a recess for the center cap to snap over , there all nice wheels
Funny you should say that. I was at a swap meet this weekend and there is a guy who's been trying to this this total rusty POS 1960 2 door wagon on Craigslist. He said "no one likes the 60 model" I said I do. But would I prefer a 59 over the 60? oh hell ya. IMHO Chevy's didn't get ugly for a few years to go after '60. Earl- you ever dig up the rear seat back- seat cover? It's blue/Silver...still MIA. I still have the Red Ones you threw in...I am going with that blue.
It wasn't with the car when I bought it . I'll see you at the Roundup....maybe I can pet the old girl...
