Coincidental that Gray's name came up here...I heard Mr J. Cobbs say that the engine in this 34 is the 283 that came out of Gray's roadster. It did some time in the Niekamp car as well.

    Hot rodders...the greatest recyclers!

A few years ago I spotted an ad on one of the old Ford boards for a set of 40 spoke Kelsey Hayes wires. I was hesitant about buying them sight unseen so I asked the seller about bent spokes, rim bends and runout. He told me that his friend Jim had made a jig and all of the rims were checked for runout on it. If they didn't p*** they were separated into a pile that were used for spares only. And he said I may have heard of his friend, he's Jim Jacobs from Pete & Jakes. I remembered seeing an article in R&C about him building that jig. The check was in the mail the same day. In my opinion after all his success he's still a true gr*** roots hot rodder.

How is that any different than running a '32 grill or swapping hubcaps? They're nicer looking valve covers in my opinion.

    Thanks for the post...cool ride.

  4. Extra cool car.

Gray introduced Pete & Jake since he knew they were independatly building cool coupes at the same time.

    .

Edit: sorry to dredge this up....was off reading & forgot it was old.

    Klaz,
Let me see if I can remember all of the way this went. I was real young when this all went down, but Jake & I used to go to dinner with a group of friends during the 90's & I had asked this myself once.
#1.The Best=He kept, It was @ his dads in Hesperia, The property is now his so it may still be there. It is one of the nicest coupes around in stock form.
#2.This is the deep purple version that had the wide locker room louvers on the hood as well as the hot flatty, the narrowed truck grille, nerf bar & the white tuck & roll interior.(Most of this ended up on the yellow car). This car was sold to Mike Harper for $900.00 big ones in order to pay for the concrete in his former Temple City back yard/shop.This is the one that DRD speaks of and that Hot Rods by Boyd built in the 80's. Mike still owns it.
#3.Another one of the good coupes, this may be the one that went to Simard, I believe it too was a stocker that needed very little.
#4 Came from a yard in San Gabriel for $50.00. This was the worst of the coupes found in that very short period. This became The Screaming Yellow Zonker which he actually recieved the most notoriety for and recieved the most money for;).
He also bought two 5 window coupes which became donor cars as part of the roof section from one of them was used on that chop.
The 57 Buick engine came from the Niekamp when he bought that, can't recall where the trans came from (could have came from Dana Chev where the Early Times used to meet) The quickie I believe was a $175.00 unit from Bell Auto. He fabbed up the hood top himself as well as the aprons out of gl***. Rear deck lid was louvered by Gene Winfield & Jake .

As for the engine that is in the Former Carl Johansen 4dr which was also from Temple City, It past installations were in Gray Baskerville's 32 Roadster, then did time in Jake's Former Niekamp roadster.

When they wanted the Niekamp for the 50th GNRS Jake pulled the small block fitted it with a 4th flathead in it's lifetime as well as freshened up paint by Peter Coppins, return to column shift and a 40 standard steering wheel instead of the 41 that it had when built, The Plymouth gauges weren't available I guess at the time of restoration, Side bar note here is that I had the correct Evans Script heads for this engine to put the engine in correct Rex Burnett cutaway specs, Jake used Offy's which is what remains on it to this day.

The 28 Panel that was driven to Peoria IL. in 70 was originally powered by a small block Ford 289 and a 4spd. Jake felt that the back of the body was sagging so hence he sold the ch***is out from under it to a friend and started on a nearly 12 year rebuild that included making new wood from scratch for the roof of that panel front to rear.Complete metal finished body & paint work by Kiwi Peter Coppins a very unique one off boxed tube ch***is that includes using stock A front horns to a point and supports the complete rear section of that body. Power is by a Barrett/Leland 283ci that Jake said the rocker studs pulled on=He wasn't happy:mad:!

Mail Truck=Coincidently was traded to Tony Piner for the 28 Tub body,Jake tells a story of how he drove the A framed Mail Truck over with the 153 ci banger from his 33, swapped out the body from the mail truck- drove it back funky & rear fenderless and got the weirdest stares all the way back. It took him 28 days to build it on the deuce ch***is, Can't tell ya where the 283ci came from for that one though.
Here is the twist, Carl Johansen ended up with the rodded version of that mail truck by way of Tony when Tony moved to Prescott AZ.
    It's not over yet.
Back in the 70's Carl had a very nice 40 Ford Rag Top project.
The person who bought it was none other than Jake :D.
    Small world now isn't it:confused:

  7. All of Jakes cars hit the nail bang on dead center on the head.
Hes always been one of my favorite people to read about since I was a kid.

    Kev,thanx for the cool lil read/history lesson:D

Anyone have some good pics of the 28 phaeton, would like to see more of it.....Shiny

  8. Wonderful recap. You should sell your services to ****an and get this stuff in the archieves while it's fresh.

Thanks for the history and hope to meet you at the GNRS.

  9. I really dig what Jake does with his cars. He has great build style!Re the chop top issue of R&C, my good friend Geoff Mitford-Taylor has one of the roof sections from the various coupes Jake chopped up to do that yellow car.
The door open on the tub shot was at a RCRR - too cool!

I laughed when i read that, figured someone would bring up the subject.:D Jakes cars certainly have kept traditional rodding alive, through all the fads that have come along.

Since this thread is showing up in my blog referrals again, I thought I would mention that I put up a big set of photos of Jake's '34 on my Flickr page:

There's lots of other new hot rod stuff too; I'm slowly moving all my photos over there.

Jake is my hero- everything he has ever done has been cool, even his Model A roadster pickup with the metalflake fenders and birdhouse camper on the back!

  13. Too right!
All of his cars have been too cool!

  14. I would love to do my closed cab pick up like this one day:

Then it would be neat to build a roadster version of this:

  18. firebrrat, When your Dad had it was it painted? Somewhere I heard that Jake stripped it back to og. paint with a razor blade.....just wondering if this was true.....

  19. Now that I think about it, I think Wayno (Elmo Rouge) told me that.....

Sorry I never saw that you put this post after I did.
Ya it was painted a light tan that was fading badly seeing how it was my dads daily driver to work he didn't do much with it. What jake did with some help from my dad was wet sand the tan off and a razor in spots to take off the paint. My dad was the 2nd or 3rd to own this car he also had a 33 3 window and a 35 5 window. He has sold them, now his love is Model A's 1929 he has 3 one is Jakes old Cali. mail truck and 2 pick ups along with my 1930 fordor and my 1931 S/W fordor at his house in so cal its a Model A home!

  22. I was over at Jake's house a few weeks ago, and the '34 4-door that's the subject of this thread now has the original fenders and hood reinstalled. It looks like a stocker. He drives it pretty often, and it shares a garage with another '34 4-door. This one has the original dark blue paint, interior, and super-low miles. It's a really, really nice car, with just enough patina to make you want to drive it.

The stuff that Jake has in his collection will make your jaw drop.

Jake and I go back to Temple City and the old Pete & Jake's. A few years ago I was up visiting him at Apple Vally and we went out to eat at a place called The Bum Steer. Whe we left it was dark and we were all riding in Jake's 1934 Fordor. Jake decides to take the senic route home across the desert at night. After going up and down a few desert roads we finally got back to a hard surface road. My son still laughs about the very bumpy trip on the backroads of the desert. Jake said he had never been that way before and grins.
