Driving my Model A yesterday the clutch suddenly went away. Barely made it home. Master cylinder for the hyd throwout took a dump. Called Summit today and it's 20.00 plus 10.00 handleing for a rebuild kit. New master cylinder is 50.00 plus 10.00 handleing. Just made sense to me to order the whole thing and be done with it. Anybody else do things this way...or am I just getting lazy?
First you have to know enough about what you are working to know if it IS rebuild-able. If you do and on inspection of the old cylinder it is fixable then kit it. If you are not sure of what you are looking at new is the answer. Now days all we have are parts changers not mechanics ,and some of them aren't even good parts changers. With the general poor quality of "mechanics" and high labor rates new is usually the most cost effective way. Me ,I take whatever apart eyeball and THEN make the decision on repair or replace.
the other thing to consider is where the new part is made. i just bought a water pump for an old chrysler that was made in a country i didn't recognize, carbombistan or something like that. i wish i could have bought a kit for it instead.
Just had to replace mine with a 60's Corvette master cylinder. It was only 20 bucks. There was no way that thing was going to be rebuilt. Ended up having to replace the booster also.
