I just had the second tube failure in a couple weeks. I bought all four tubes from O'Reilly's Sept 2011. On my way home from LSR I had one split all the way around the perimeter seam. I wrote this off as bad luck. Then last night I had another tube on a different tire start to leak. I checked it out today and it was starting to split along the inside seam! I just got done switching all the tubes out for some Firestone's from a farm store. They appear to be much better quality than the generic ones from the parts store. Just figured I would let you all know.
Sort of funny this came up. I don't normally like using tubes, but I needed to use one this week to get a bead to properly seat on a narrow tire/wide rim issue. I had a problem that I have never had before. No matter what direction I turned the tube, the valve stem would not properly stick out of the rim hole and it kept pulling back in after putting air in it. It is almost as if the stem has been placed in an unusual way on the tube...
I could never bring myself to buy "racing tubes" for drag slicks; too much $$$. So, I always used RADIAL tire tubes, and NEVER had any problem with using them. I also mount them using LOTS of baby powder. Like almost everything else, tubes are probably mostly manufactured off shore these days, and we all know what that means. Butch/56sedandelivery.
Even fixing my kid's bikes over the years... the quality of those tire tubes is also piss-poor. Porous as hell. I like radial tubes as well. Car Quest used to carry good ones and I used them in my stock car left rear so I could run the pressure down low. Bob
welcome to the much-vaunted and highly-praised "World Economy". Along with crappy rubber, this concept includes lead in paint and children's toys, pet foods that are poisonous, and just plain cheaply-made junk. This country willingly imports items and products that are against the law to manufacture here, but happily shipped in with little or no inspection for compliance with regulations that stateside manufacturers must adhere to. This is why chrome falls off of offshore parts, threaded pieces don't bolt together, fenders don't match up to mounting holes...ad infinitum, ad nauseam. dj
If its inferior, send it back! They think its good if they never see the crap they sell. Show the seller the junk.
I've been told to always buy brand name tubes adn have not been let down. Michelin is a good choice, as is F'stone. Cosmo
I had a tube fail while the car was parked in the garage. Upon disassembly, it seemed really thin and cheap - it split around the valve stem. I found some nice, heavy 16" farm tubes at Tractor Supply (it was Sunday). They are quite heavy, but don't seem to run any hotter than the thin ones. I've used two with no problems so far. Any one else have experience with these?
Yikes! I hope I have good luck with the tubes I bought from Fleet Farm, a somewhat farm implement store. I put em on my 40 Plymouth, stock rims/tire combo but haven't had the car on the street yet.
JFWIW When installing the tube into the tire pay attention to the tube to ensure the stem is on the correct side of the wheel. I used to believe it didn't matter on how the tube went into the tire until an old timer pointed out this fact. To prove the point just put a small amount of air into the tube before installing and you will see that the stem is positioned off center.
I know Joe, and I had the same trouble as he did. And we got into trouble for nameing names on that thread.
I tried taking the tubes back but they only carry a 90 day limited warranty. They didn't care that it chewed up one of my Firestones and cost me $190 to replace it!
When I return chit made in China, I always tell the clerk to send this piece of crap back to China........they probably don't care, but it let's off some steam.
"prop wash " ????? i hope THIS "POOR qUALITY iN RuBBer pRoducts DoEs'nt apply, .............LIKE Condoms ! (never had One Split, even when i used a Tire Tool....To putt'em ON ! ) Yeah, It "smokin' time agin ! Lol
