I have a 250 out of a 78 chevy that hasn't been started in a couple of years. any advise on how to check the condition. I don't want to rebuild it if it doesn't need it. Not sure of the mileage. I plan on putting it in my 48 international.

Get it running, see if it makes odd noises, smokes, etc. And run a compression test after you warm up the engine.

If you don't want to start it to find out, you're going to be guessing.

    Thanks Jim.
That is what I"ll do. What kind of compression should I be looking for.

You want it to be within 10% on all cylinders, and somewhere around 120 is typical.
