Just got back from seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the local IMAX theatre... Holy **** it was good! I was very afraid to see this movie. It was my all time favorite movie when I was a kid... I remember lining up to see the original at the opulent if run down Alabama Theater in downtown Birmingham. Kids were given an official "Willie Wonka chocolate factory" as a freebie... melt your own chocolate and pour into the Wonka molds, then when cool, wrap with official Wonka labels... including your very own Golden Ticket. Mom threw the kit away years ago (I still get mad thinking about it... Mom's idea of "cleaning" is throwing away anything that isn't HERS). The NEW version is extrordinary... the cinematography is beautiful... Depp is killer as usual... Elfman is Elfman which is beyond compare... he even sings this time... not just composes. The Oompa Loompas look like Nads. GO SEE THIS MOVIE ON THE BIG SCREEN... DON'T WAIT FOR THE DVD!!!!
For Chrisake, ya mean the Oompa Loompa's wear a fez and ride a ratty *** Knucklehead? Jakespeed (on sabatical in Sanoma) P.S. Thanks for the review Siskel and Ebert, but what the hell does Willie Wonka have to do with Hot Rodding?
Argh! I hated the original and won't ever see any remake! The first one is by far the WORST movie I've ever seen! It made me HATE Gene Wilder...but 'Sliver Streak' rescued his reputation soon after!
Oh go stick your thumb up your **** already, new guy. I never saw the first one, so I guess I should go and see the new one,eh?
Oompa doompa noobie be dumb... you pissed her off boy, you better run (ok,.,, no i didnt get any sleep last night. so what?) i agree with Trant,,, i have nightmares to this day about freekin oompa loompas man
First, this all is really really O/T Second, the original movie was good and I still think Gene Wilder is Willy Wonka-and the man did build a modified boat. But neither movie will capture the dispair, sinisterisms or evilness that Roald Dahl's book did. Finally,Johnny Depp is a grear actor, but WHY would I want to see a movie where he looks like Michael Jackson and lures kids to the Neverland Ranch? Too Creepy.
Willie Wonka DOES have alot to do with hot rodding....Have you noticed how everytime someone doesn't like something on the board, or disagrees with another member, the term GAY seems to be thrown around????....Well...apparently quite a few people are VERY familiar with the Chocolate Highway...........
I'm gonna see it today with a neighbor and our respective kids, matinee show. The actor who's playing ALL the oompa loompas is a veteran of Indian movies, Deep Roy's his name. I can't wait to see it.
I just wonder how he got that name....... It's funny, but I never realized just how many movies this guy's been in.
Newbies (and grenade inspectors) make me giggle. Oh wait, are you supposed to be putting me "in my place"... hmmmm... don't think it worked then. Sorry. A lot of people didn't like the first Willie Wonka... its one of those love it or hate it no in between movies. I'm a love it girl. I DID think of Michael Jackson during the new movie... I wonder if Johnny Depp was talking like him on PURPOSE? Nads, let me know how you liked the movie... Deep Ray is one (million) cool Oompa Loompa! I'm sure you would have dressed him in Cabana Boy outfits if you had done the movie!
Just for information, the actor is "Deep Roy". He does a great job. Check out :: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0746989/ Let's all just go to the movies.
I saw a review that made me want to see it because of the trained squirrels--apparently done without special effects. Rodents make it on topic, right?? We talk about rodents a LOT here. Search "rat" or mouse". It has people in it too? Why?
The movie is astounding, I was left breathless. It's truly one of the best films ever made. It dosn't detract from the original, it complements it. My 4 year old son loved it too, as did the wife. The Bollywood/Busby Berkley styled musical numbers are incredible. It's amazing the way that trite dance moves could be made so fresh. The heavy metal number's obviously a nod to Spinal Tap. Deep Roy has the same exact facial expression regardless of the situation he's(them) in. As for Johnny Depp, he ought to be in the running for an Oscar for his deranged portrait of Willy Wonka, he's at once confused yet totally in control. The children were outstanding actors also. I can't believe how ugly Tim Burton made Helena Boham Carter (his real life wife) look. It's a future cl***ic, I give it five stars.
I saw it the day it came out...and was waiting for a loooong time to see this movie. I had set the bar extremely high and it p***ed....i thought it was possibly the best movie of the year so far, right up there with Sin City and Lords of Dogtown, and batman begins. the first thing I thought of when I saw the oompa loompas were Nads.. the musical numbers were kick ***!! the beginning of the movie was great....I was a "little" dissapointed at the ending as there was a quick transition there unlike the original, where charlie gives back the thing he stole..and the whole charlie and the grandpa in the big fan thing in the original, but other than that it was great. Johnny Depp was great for the role and the humor and "darkness" were great too. just like the original. I even dug the backstories of the oompa loompas and willy wonka.
MUMBLER! I think that is what I'm gonna yell to the newbies when they try to tell me I'm not talking "trad rods and customs". Caffeine... have you ever read the actual book? You should... all of Roald Dahl's books are killer.
yeah, and Charlie and the Great Gl*** Elevator is good too. the first movie traumatized me as a kid as I thought ww was creepy as hell and the whole tunnel scene in the original was dark as hell (hey i was like 5 when i saw it!)
I haven't been a go to the movies kinda gal in years. The number of movies I have access to at home because of work (with a large screen TV) is overwhelming so I haven't felt the need to sit in a theater with other people who are talking and munching popcorn with their mouths open. You guys have convinced me that I need a movie date this week. Thanks for the review.
Gotta agree with the Robster on the ending, very Hollywood, very sicklysweet. I have to confess I haven't read the books, now I'm going to have to. Stiil, it was a remarkable achievement in film making.
Saw it this weekend with the kids. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. Still I liked the original better.
