I'm just a humble transmission shop owner with an eclectic interest in various forms of vintage vehicles. I have dutifully tried to understand the criteria of this forum and and will continue to do so but for the life of me I cannot grasp what 'trad' really means. Other than any vehicle newer than 1965 is not good and if it's older than that, rusty and sits on the ground it's
'cool' and '*****in'. Hopefully there are some forum members capable of expaining trad, I'm ****ing serious here, not attempting to piss anyone off or flame or any such ****. Don't need any questions of my motives or parentage, just need to hear some views that make sense to an outside observer.

There'll be a million answers to this (!), but my reply always is a vehicle that could be pictured in Rodder's Journal, Rod and Custom, Rolls and Pleats or Hop Up....

Its been my understanding that traditional means the way the cars were built back in the day, as they say. If you could take a picture of the car today in black and white you wouldnt be able to tell if the pic was actualy taken today rather then back then. My take

An era specific Hot Rod or Custom built in a style from 1964 and earlier, paying homage to the cars built back then. (As far as I am concerned, the "Rusty stuff that sits on the ground is not always traditional,... mostly just the "RR" stuff, that real Traditional Hot Rodders try to distance themselves from)

A thoughtful, cl***y machine. Sometimes this is a beautiful show car, sometimes it's made in the suede, and sometimes it's somewhere in between. Look at some of the picture threads, the ones with lots of posts will give you the whole spectrum of what this site is all about. Everyone here has a little bit different view of the same big picture. You aren't going to see cars or techniques that are unsafe... and no one here is intentionally putting bullet holes in their car for the "kool" factor. There are plenty of other sites that cater to the "cars" that are booger welded together running tractor grill shells and parts that don't match.

  10. Mike...it's easier this way. Look at all the cars left on the HAMB after everybody voices their "not Traditional" cries. What you have left is "Traditional"....:) Centurion9

IMO, the purpose of this site has been muddled in recent years with true-nontraditional builds, but I don't argue it.

The B&W photo test is what I follow.

Don't beat yourself up trying to figure it all out Mike.

Just do what you really want to do and if it turns out not to fit this forum then don't post about it or show pictures.
You can still hang out here and enjoy it if you like the same stuff as the core members....doesn't say you HAVE to have a 100% Trad car.
A "liking for" and some common sense in what you post will get anyone by...

The very LAST thing you want to be is someone who builds their car to fit someone elses vision.

JMHO, but this forum is part of the "Jalopy Journal", and HAMB stands for "Hokey *** Message Board"......so to me that narrows it down considerably....
Basically home built with what was available up thru 1964, using that era basic tech....Also included would be the medium professional cars that would have been driven by guys/gals who had a Dad or relative that owned a body shop, or dealership...
And no mine aren't totally correct either...but you did ask..
    Cheers....

I think a "traditional build" and a "period build" would be tha same. A vehicle that is built or rebuilt into something that is time frame specific, with no parts used that were mfg after the period that the builder is wishing to define. The paint, upolstery, styling, wheels, tires.everything must be consistant with the prescribed time frame. All the above said,I am doing just that with my 28 chevy 3 window that I originally built in 1963. Yes it will be a new build, but I will use pre 1966 parts to do it,because thats the "period" I want it to represent. The paint will be acrylic lacquer, just as it is now,in fact, most of the paint will only be sanded, spotted in where needed, and re clear coated (with DCA 468).

    Heres a few more.

Whats a question with no answer called?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up 10 times every hour?

Why is Charlie short for Charles if they are both the same number of letters?

If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?

    Pooh time? :p

It's been asked so many times, and answered...

You are wrong Larry, oh so wrong, it's several times a month. :D:D

    But here we go again...

If it doesn't look like it's out of the little books, or off the street or track 64'ish and earlier it doesn't cut it. Pretty easy really. Though there are some things that seem to get a p***, like the whole stupid patina ****.

******* in a wad already? Read the site, your question has been answered so many times it's kind of ridiculous. And the thin skin doesn't really go very well here. Of course Jeffrey James did make me an image for just such cases...

Hey !,... I guess I fall under both categories !!!:D

If you were a genie and a person asked you this wish, "I wish you would not grant me this wish" what would you do?

If something "goes without saying," why do people still say it?

    Do pyromaniacs wear blazers?

What if Batman gets bitten by a vampire?

Can we spell the word "creativity" however we want?

Is it true cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?

If you don't pay your exorcist, do you get repossessed?

A true traditional car is one that is period correct, wether it is built in a style from the 40's 50's 60's or early 70's the parts used on the vehicle must match the era that is trying to be emulated, I DON'T AGREE WITH THE 64 CUT OFF YEAR! there was some very cool stuff built in the late sixties and seventies, their was a lot of cool show cars and race vehicles built in this era and deserve their spot as an important part of our hot rod and custom history. I feel the correct cut off year should be 1973, this was the last year of chrome bumpers and high performance engines.
