I have a 1957 Chevy 283 that is blowing the oil filter gasket out. It has had the spin on adaptor for 20 years with no problems. It has sat since 1985. I have removed it many times and it is not cracked, assembled correctly, gaskets all set right (no extras). I even removed the blow by valve and it still blows it. Any ideas? I dont know how much pressure there was because it only runs for 15 seconds and then blows.
If you still have the road draft tube, and not PCV,the tube may be plugged. This wil cause high crankcase pressure
OK you do know that to use the adapter you must use two gaskets. To get the first gasket you must buy the old cartridge filter and rob the gasket ( o ring) from it. This goes under the adapter and seals it, the second gasket is on the spin on filter when you buy it. I like the newer style kits as the eliminate the old bypass cone piece and replace it with a non bypass piece. This new style uses the Ford spin on filter that has the bypass in the filter. I've noticed on some new gaskets- (o ring ) that they are thinner and some material must be machined away on the adaptor shoulder for it to compress the o ring and seal up. You might add a mechanical gauge and check oil pressure ? The pump bypass might be stuck closed
The tube is clear because I saw smoke coming from it. I made sure both gaskets are there. The adaptor has beed on for 30 years so it is not the problem. I will add an oil pressure guage and see what I have. I am thinking an oil passage is sludged up? How do I clean that if I cant hold fluids in?
Is it actually blowing the gasket out, or is just blowing the oil past the gasket? Have you changed oil filter brands recently?
How bad does it blow oil out? Profusely or just a leak? Have you had the engine apart or outof the car and the bell taken off? Reason I ask is becasue the bolt from the bell directly behind the filter adapter has to be short or it will protrude and hit the adapter causing a leak. You already know how I know this don"t you?
Hope you get it fixed...I'll NEVER run one of those again. I had a Rocket brand adapter crack and blew all the oil out before I noticed it [was going through the gears] and lost my fresh engine...
The old ones required that you have the original bypass valve in place for the adapter to clamp down on or you ended up flexing the adapter and causing a leak or cracking the adapter. Also most of the older adapters run a Ford style filter rather than a Chevy style filter and some people make the mistake of trying to run a Chevy filter on them.
I vote for getting a gauge on it...... Sounds like a stuck by-pass. Sitting a long time can make things happen like that. 4TTRUK
Thanks all. The adaptor is in place and has been since '85 with no problems. It sat since then so i am assuming this all has something to do with sitting for so long. Previous owner said it ran when parked and I have had back-up to this fact.
Put a pressure gauge on it. Mechanical from the port at the top of the filter housing fi you can and see wht the pressure is when it does this. How about an update on this issue too.
