I just picked up a Halibrand QC rear and I am wondering (what hubs fit this rear) for 40 ford style brakes with Buick brake drums? The Halibrand is a 10 bolt Model V8 made in Culver City. The axles are tapered with a keyway.

When guys do this trick on the front, '47-'48 Ford hubs are used. I'm thinking the same years for the rears.
Do a search, I recall this one was covered with pics.

I thought so to but when I called the guys at Thomsons Garage they said that that only works on the fronts and they are not sure what works on the QC Halibrands (anyone know for sure?)

Couldn’t you use custom Ford-to-Buick axles and have the appropriate Buick axle housing hubs, flange and bearings surfaces mated to a set of Ford bells? At that point the Buick drums would be a bolt on.

I have a Culver City QC on my roadster with 60’s era Ford axle and brake ***emblies mounted on early Ford bells, which work fine. You would have to think about a parking brake set up though.

I'm a dummy, I admit, but can't you re-drill the drums to 5 1/2" bolt circle and use them with the Ford axles.

My partner Ron and I do these all the time. we do it differently than most, as we open the center of the Buick drum to 4" so
that the later hubs will index in this hole. We then use the 3 holes which held rivets in the Buick drum to bolt the drum to the hub ( we drill and tap the hub). We then change the bolt pattern to 5 on 5 1/2" Works front or rear! After the new hub is installed we then turn the drums and you ar set to go.

Thats not the problem. I know how to fit the Buick drums to the ford hubs, I did this on the front drums. My problem is finding the hubs to fit my 1-1/8" tapered axles that were in the rearend when I bought it. I tried the 1940 ford Hubs from the front and they don't fit the rear. The hub opening is to small for the tubes in the rear.

I guess I should ask if the tapered keyway tipe axles are a waist of time and I should switch to a different style (splined or Flange type)? Will they hold up to approx 400HP with narrow tires?

Salt flat willy, you got the answer twice and your light bulb didnt click and why would you use front hubs on the rear, they arent even close?. To use the Buick finned brakes with early Ford tapered axles you use the tapered axle rear brake hubs from a 1947-8 Ford or do it the way that was suggested by Dagasbag. Dagasbag way positions the drums over the hub like a latemodel, Using the stock 47-8 hub and positioning the drum on the inside of the hub, just like you do on the front, requires that you remove some material from the water lip edge of the backing plate to keeep the Buick drum from dragging on the backing plate.

If you plan on burning down the tires the stock axles will not necessarily fail but you must have put good parts together and tightened the axle nut to 220lbs-ft torque. If you are going to drive it like a normal car it will be perfectly fine.

Thanks ****!! You are right it was right there and I knew the rears were different, I had a brain fart and needed a bump. The extra tip on the backing plates was a bonus! Thanks again!
