needed an electric fan but the original fan guard is too cheap looking, these are the types you buy on line

so wanted something a bit more interesting.

first step was to cut a wooden former
    [IMG]

steel sheet was cut and bent over the former except for the top edge which was fold up
    [IMG]

i test fitted it on to the back of the rad
    [IMG]

i removed the plastic guard/mount of the fan and laid it where it will need to fit
    [IMG]

a load of tape was used to check the position of the fan wasn't going to interfere with the water pump
    [IMG]

everything clears, so the fan shroud was put back on the wood former. sections were folded and curved on my stretcher to form the fan sides. these were screwed through into the wood to hold them in place
    [IMG]

once i had all the sections made, i plug welded them in place hopefully this will minimise distortion
    [IMG]

to mount the fan motor i made 3 tapering channel sections
    [IMG]

drilled some holes in them to allow better air flow (they look better as well). then they were fitted to a central ring
    [IMG]

placed on the fan shroud ready to be welded on
    [IMG]

once welded the fan was removed so that the centre could be cut out
    [IMG]

    fan refitted
    [IMG]

    fitted onto the radiator

Nice job. Looks a whole lot better than what you had. Why did you need a electric fan by the way.

i needed an electric fan due to the water pump being to close to and low down on the radiator. it also frees up a few horsepower

Yes i see that now. Funny how different builds turn out even if the equipment is basicly the same. I'm running a sbf in my 28 and used a big flex fan. That's why i was asking. Nice job. Should work out real nice.

Very nice job!! I have a similar one on my T ,and i'm wondering if its flat does it also pull from the sides? The ones that are Factory made are kind of "funnel" shaped..

It's flat but sits off the core about 3/8". The fan spans the whole of the active cooling cores, due to the shape of the rad some of the outer ones are just for show.

Thanks for the share...I've been envisioning something similar for my truck. Think I'll 'borrow' some of your ideas.

I always liked the look of this one, made from a food steamer - buffet table tray :)
