check NADA for cl***ic cars, look at what cars are selling for in your area(Craigslist), etc. remember, the economy ****s and depending where you're at, prices could be down 30%. i've got a friend with a split window 63 loaded up vette which according to Hemmings list at $104k and he is asking $65k.

you gain money on using the word "rat rod" in your ad..

you lose cool points for using the word "rat rod" in your ad..

... i still dont know why they think its a good nomenclature.

i blame it on the VW crowd.. ahaha

Dont know about selling but buying reminds me of the scripture - it is not, it is not says the buyer, then he goes away and brages.

I did a few searches for car prices.... this seems like one that might be appropriate...

I was looking at the craigs list in my area.... and found this....

I know the recession is not as bad here...but this seems like a very high price to me... seems he doesnt....

Can't comment on the price, but how do you spend 14k on a transmission rebuild? Put gold in the clutch packs :D I could understand if it had something to do with racing, but a stock 302 can't put out that much power.

I price my cars based on knowing what the market is, that involves doing research on all of the available selling sites, and price them accordingly.
People ask all kinds of crazy prices, which is their choice..but, if they really want to sell it, they will need to have a reality check.
Buyers of old cars aren't as stupid, or un-informed as some people believe.

For the few I sold I researched like crazy then was honest with myself on the condition of the car - they all aren't #1 condition show cars - set the price ***uming a 10% negotiation margin then be nice to all interested parties - even the wackadoos. A savvy buyer will be evaluating you as much as the car. The more off the norm a car is the harder it is to price. A few months ago at Garlits I saw a factory 4 door 55 Chevy convertible. How do you price that?

  12. I am right with you!....got my 62 Galaxie rag for sale, great running Texas car needs paint and upholstery...but lots of engineering done a real good car and NO takers, can't get the cost of parts never mind labour????

We sold a very complete '36 5 window coupe minus an engine and trans for 7,800 and to be honest; we probably lost money on it because we sent along the parts we bought for it in the process of owning it (over a grand worth of parts). I can't count the number of people who told us we were practically giving that car away; and if it was 5 years ago; it wouldve sold for double. Unfortunately; despite what we were told, there was a lot of interest in it, but not many serious buyers. It seems to me that people today expect to get a whole lotta something for next-to nothin'. Our '36 needed work; quite a bit of work but the body was free of dents, fenders were in nice shape, and it had everything from the orignialy headlights, gauges, steering, etc. it was all there and how often do you come across one of those? I understand the economoy and i understand that there is a lot of overpriced junk out there being advertised, but most people are just trying to re-coupe some of what they spent and move on :)

My rule of thumb on coming up with an asking price is using "role reversal"
Look at the car from the serious buyers standpoint....
Ask yourself; "if I were buying this car what would I be willing to pay for it?"
If you are asking $15K for a car that you would not even give a second look at....what do you expect others to do?
Most cars out there for sale you could not build to the same condition for the asking price....then there are those priced at that are not worth a second glance.
If you expect to generate a sale....look at it as "what would I pay for it?"

There ya go! That's the beauty of a free market. You price a car at what you want to get for it and if a buyer thinks it's worth that much, then it gets sold. It's not very complicated.

There will always be sellers that are trolling for a ****er. That doesn't mean they'll find one.

  16. Regardless of price if I like the car I will make an offer if it's not flexible I'm gone.
as for the way I price my stuff depends on how bad I want to get rid of it. that only happens about once every 20 years.

Had an older 4x4 truck that I wasn't sure I wanted to sell but listed it on several appropriate sites at what I thought was a more than fair price just to see if someone would run here and get it. I mentioned that if no one bought it in the first week I was going to raise the price, just to motivate any lookers. I got several serious inquieries and probably had it sold but I backed out before he spent any money coming to look at it. Point is, I wasn't serious about selling it. On the day I listed it, I would have let it go, but the longer it stayed on the market, the more I thought I would regret selling it. So I didn't. Bottom line: some people don't really want to sell. In my case the price was fair because at first, I thought I wanted it gone. Some people know up front that they don't want to sell; they're just seeing if they can reel in someone who can't live without it.

all that is good, but it seems every time I try to sell a car or parts based on what the market says, people laugh at me. I had a set of artillery wheels 16" 6 lug asked 80 for pair. People offered 30. where in the world can you buy them for 30. I would rather them rot then give em away. but seems everybody else can get triple what I ask go figure, must be my charming personality!!!

every car I've ever sold I have had some ***hole tell me it was overpriced. for some reason they think I am interested in thier opinion, or I care about a car equal to mine that was sold for much less.

funny, I've had about 40 old cars over the years and only have 2 now. guess they weren't overpriced after all.

  22. What goes around...comes around, wait till the guy that bought your 36 actually builds it (probably about another 4 or 5 owners..seems to be the way) He will put double or triple the time and effort than expected into the build and end up selling for 40 cents on the dollar. If you want a cheaper car...buy it don't build it!!!

I find selling price (and selling it in general) is often dictacted by timing more than anything. The time something actually sells is when there are no other comparables in your area, or website your selling on. Then if its listed at a time when people have money to spend like tax refund season, The one guy looking for what you have will find you.
If there are no other comparables, the buyer will have to make a real good legit decision as to its value. The value then becomes a percentage of duplication or "cost to build it" instead of the comparable approach - which is most often higher than comparables. Then factoring in cost of time to search, find, ship a comp, value of yours is increased. Buyer gets a good deal as he couldnt build it for that, and you get to sell your car at a fair price. The more comparables, the less its worth IMO.

The 50% of what you have in it is a good rule of thumb too :)

I have never sold a car on eBay. Sold many many collectible cars on CL. Next time, I am listing a collectible on eBay with a hidden reserve (what I feel it's worth). The selling price (highest bidder) will determine market value.

I'm terrible at selling cars, I always lose money. I sell them for enough to pay the bills, or ask slightly more than the next project I have my eye on so I can buy that. I try to price them so if I saw the ad on cl I would grab cash and try to be the first guy there. I never have stuff For sale long and I'm always told by the buyer what a good deal it is so I feel fine about losing money.

I don't know. I seem to buy high and sell low.

Apparently a penchant for ******y is required.
