I was just reading a R&C last night from '56. I momentarily thought about clipping the Honest Charley ad and sending in an order, using those crazy prices. It is sorta demoralizing, ain't it. :D

Next Tech Week, I hope someone post plans to build a Delorean time machine. We'll head back and stock up!

My old issues only go back to the seventies, but even those prices would sure reduce the estimate on the RPU to within the budget.

On the Delorean time machine. I think I have everything but the Delorean and the flux capacitor. The plutonium fuel, might be a little harder to come by, since the nuke plant near here increased their security because of the terrorists.

I have a magazine somewhere from the very late 50's, maybe Motor Trend? Anyhow there's a Tucker in the for sale ads, and a couple different ultra-rare European cl***ics.

I'm guessing if you found an average working man's pay stub from the same era you wouldn't feel quite so bad. Though I'm sure stuff was still realively cheaper just because it wasn't as rare.

In the mid sixties,I p***ed up tons of driveable Model A's for $5-800,but I was a kid making $1.50 an hour.

I've got some early 70's mags with fully loaded Deuce rods that are $3500-5000. Sad. Course, I can remember saying I'll go elsewhere rather than pay 35 cents a gallon for gasoline.

I've got a bunch of '50's magazines that I thumb through occasionally. It amazes me what was available back then and much that stuff went for....Of course, I bought a '70 Nova SS with a 396 and a four speed when I was 18 for $700.00, try doing that now.......

like they said about workin man's pay...when my dad worked at the steel mill in the 60s,he started at TWO DOLLARS AN HOUR...he found an old stub from back then where he worked 60 hours and cleared $90....BEFORE taxes and union dues..and back then he could still afford a house and a new corvette.. :-O

    :)

    In 1969, I had a great job. I was making 4 dollars a hour. That was real good....$160 a week. I bought a new 1969 Nova SS with a 396 and a 4 speed....$2900 out the door.

I could have bought a NICE 32 full fendered 5Window (327, 4 speed, real nice paint and shiny wheels ) for $2500. But..NO....... I wanted to go drag racing....

Yea, I remember those "glory" days well. I was bringing home $57/week working for GM in 1961. When I quit we had just signed a new contract that boosted my pay to $3.08/hr. and we got doors on the ****ters so no one could see how you were hung while getting a few ZZZZZZ's when you should have been working. Wish I could get back all of the $$$$'s they took out of my pay for union dues so the reps could hire *****s to relieve the tension of intense negotions at contract time.

In 1966 I went to work as a postal clerk @ $2.64 an hour [ up from a grocery clerk @ $1.75 an hour. My first check was $175 clear{2 weeks} I paid $175 for a 1931 Model A coupe-all original w/ 2 engines- wish I had kept it. That is why I won't ever sell my '35 Ford pu.

  15. I had a bunch of 70's mags and I found it hilarious to see how we kept our hair and dressed. Those bell bottoms were awsome. Ha!

I've got tons of mags from the 50's. One of them even has an article done in 56 by George Barris on How to Customize your car............need to have him sign it!!:D They also have adds for kits to make your 58 Biscayne an Impala, a complete gl*** 32 roadster for a couple hundred bucks and various "custom" kits for a couple of tenners. I thought about clipping and sending in just to see!!:p But I know better....:(
