Just looked at a too far gone 1950 COE with a Flathead V8. Is it worth the trouble to drop the motor or should I just send it dow the road to become rebar with the rest of it? S**** is S****, but what do you look for in a flathead, or are most of them crackad and not worth the time? Yes, I s**** stuff to fund my Roadster.:) Bob

Maybe more trouble then it's worth but I'd still grab it. If it wasn't left with water in the block, in a winter area, it'll probably be fixable. 8ba can be bored out to .125. Trans should have the tail section for open drive.

If it had an air cleaner on it all these years it may have not had rain down the gullet. Probably still locked up, but maybe not terminally. You'll have to tear it down to look for cracks.

The big trans in a COE is probably worthless.

If it the 4 speed non synchro it's not worth much. However if reverse is to the right and up it's a 4 speed synchro which someone may want. IIRC an 5 speed synchro was also put in some of the larger trucks.

  5. Bob,
I like to tinker with ****, even **** that I would not run myself.

it is well known that I am not MR. Flathead. My build style is later valve in head era. But even at that if I had a flatty to tinker with I would.

I think if I could get the COE drop the engine and ****** and smash the rest and still come out weither even or on top I would keep the flatty and ****** for something to tinker with. Even if I wasn't going to use it for anything. Hell ya just never know you may get it built to the hitl and end up owning a bucket or equally light body that needs and engine.

trans is probably a crash box unless its an F-6. then could be a synchro. also the half bell is worth $80-100
I say pull the engine and trans, even if the engine block is cracked there are enough parts to pay for your time.

Good luck with it and have fun.

I wouldn't s**** a flathead with out at least looking to see if it could be saved. Or finding someone who would.

If you don't want to bother, sell the engine to someone really cheap, they have to pull it. Price it somewhat above what salvage weight is. Not much bother to you, maybe save some potentially good old ****.

I agree-don't make a decision until you know what you have. They come apart fairly easily.
