Assuming that the conditions are good and it happens this year, how much would I miss by going on Mon. and Tues. vs. the opening couple of days? I've been there on the first weekend two times, but I'm curious if lots of people head for home after that due to work or breaking the racecar in the first few days, bla bla bla. Also if anyone is interested, it looks as though I'll have a couple extra hotel rooms at the Bonneville Motel for Friday through Monday.
I would be interested in a room for Fri-Mon if you pass. Only reason I'm planning on opening weekend is my boys have to be back in school by the following Thurs. There's a few that end up leaving by monday but some of the big boys don't even run til Mon or so because the staging lines are so long. It becomes a bit more laid back by Monday too. Your call I would say. BenD
Been to the Salt many times. More often than not the big hitters don't even arrive until early in the week. Early in the week can be great time!
I go out on Friday before the first day and stay untill Tuesday or Wednesday every year. You will have a great time no matter when you arrive. Things do taper off a little as the week goes on but the quality is there always. Don.
Sounds good fellas. We had a big B'ville caravan planned this year, but a bunch of guys couldn't make it so my girlfriend and I are combining a couple days at the salt with a wedding in Vegas the following weekend. Any recommendations for a nice campground on our way down I-80 in the Wyoming/Utah area?
Speaking of Bonneville, What's the latest on the salt condition? I hope it's getting dry and flat! --Matt
The last I heard very little standing water, still damp, won't take much sun and wind to take care of that. Word is surface looks real GOOD!
The temperature has been between 98 and 103 for the last week and will be the same for at least the next week. The salt is "cooking"! The information below was taken from the SCTA website. They'll probably update the information after next week. The "Pre-Trip" to lay out our courses for this years events will be the week of July 18th. (Tentative only), Mike Waters "I was out on the salt just yesterday. It looks to me like the salt is in better shape this year than last. Coverage around the end of the access road looks better this year. There was no standing water anywhere except a few small holes but the salt was still very "slushy" because of remaining moisture. But I think that will dry up pretty well in the next month. Looking forward to this year's events. Good luck." Ray Kelsey Outdoor Recreation Planner Salt Lake Field Office Bureau of Land Management
We usually go the first 3 or 4 days of speed week. The first few days of speed week are great, but the end of the week is a little slower. We were planning to debute our modified roadster at this years speed week. However, it looks like we may have to run in september(world of speed) and october (world finals). If you have never been to these later events I recomend it. The staging lines are not as long, the weather mild, and a wendover hotel can be found. Dad and I will be ther the first of the week in his black 36 ford with idaho plates, minus our race car, look for us and say hi.
Hey Randy, is that '36 a five window? I've got one waiting in the wings and I'm still getting ideas for it.
Yes, It is a 5 window. It runs a 383 with a 700r auto. He recently installed bags, that put it way down in the weeds. We have run it in primer for the last 3 years. The interior is basic with a tuck n roll planned for this winter. It looks great on the salt and is driven from SE idaho to wendover for the salt three times a year without a problem. I will send som pictures when I get home.
Chris, thanks for posting on the room availability and a second thanks for transfering one to me and the wife. That's a big load off. Viva La HAMB!!! Charlie
Chris 50, There is a pretty nice KOA just off the freeway in Lyman, Wyoming. That's about 30-40 miles east of the Utah border. We had a family reunion there last weekend. They have a pool, laundry, etc. Don.
Latest news from SCTA: "News from our Advanced BONNEVILLE SPEED WEEK Recon Team : The salt is hard and dry. The Long and Short Courses have been surveyed and are in the process of being dragged." News from our Advanced BONNEVILLE SPEED WEEK Recon Team : 7-22-05 We have just returned from our trip to layout our courses for this upcoming salt season. As most of you are aware, we had a fair amount of water covering the salt this past winter. It has taken a while to dry, but dry it did. We have established our customary two courses, one long and one short so we should be able to keep lines at a minimum. Though they are not in exactly the same location as last years courses, we believe they will be suitable for our record number of entries (based on our pre-entry count) and with a little luck the weather will hold for us. This year we found the salt very hard but also very rough. We began preliminary dragging of the courses during our Pre-Trip and will continue to drag after our early arrival prior to SpeedWeek to assure that we provide our participants with the best courses possible. http://www.scta-bni.org/
a guy on the airplane I was on had a 300mph club t-shirt on. I asked and he said that he has been there.... yeahhhhh 300mph! I was like whoooooh. He said his father kinda help start Bonneville back in the day... he also was the first to hit 300mph in a hotrod (32 roadster).... I got the chills as he was talking... I told him so and he lifted his sleeve and show me his goosebumps and we both laughed like schoolgirls. His son and nephew are 300mphers also. Good times! He said he is out at El Mirage all the time... he is from Temecula I guess. blake
I took some shots of a cool 36 5 window at Speedweek '04. Was that your coupe with the louvered hood, Randy?
he also was the first to hit 300mph in a hotrod (32 roadster).... ****************************** I hate when this happens. Looks like Blake got storied. As rpu28 says there are no 300 mph 32s in the club. Too bad Blake didn't get the guys name. Both the Bonneville and El Mirage 200 MPH clubs have a standing requirement that only the club member can wear the uniform. Some members do pass out the shirts and hats to friends and family, it will always happen We have one guy in the El Mirage club that has bought so much stuff that we won't sell to him anymore. When you see an 8 year old girl in Hawaii wearing an El Mirage 2 club shirt you know its time to draw the line in the sand. I know it takes the effort of several people on a team to accomplish the goal of setting a record over 200 MPH there in fact is only one person in the seat making it happen. Dan Warner Member of the Board of Directors Bonneville 200 MPH Club El Mirage 200 MPH Club
Well thats different. Plenty of highboys got drivers into the club. Isn't about time we got a bunch of Speedweek posts? Time is running short. I know of a streamliner guy who just got his trick rear end assembly and found it won't fit in the car. A big thrash, I know he'll make it though. DW
