38 Ford 3 speed not going into 2nd

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by zombiescustoms, May 9, 2012.

  1. I just got my Flathead in my 32 tudor running, and the trans will not go into 2nd. With the top off I can physically put it in 2nd but when I put the trans top on the spider is too far back for the fork to line up. I sure hope I don't have to pull this thing out again, I want to have her done for the jalopy showdown next weekend.

  2. Just as a note, the trans was rebuilt 8 years ago with later zepher gears, but not used till today, so I'm thinking it may have been put together wrong?

As I recall you can put the sliding collar on backwards which gives you your problem. Look closely and see if the fork groove is not offset to one side.

  5. Damn, I was thinking something had to be in wrong, can you give me some guidance as to what needs to be done to switch it round?

Snaptwo could be spot on...The other possibilty is that it is an early shifter top, with the wrong 2-3 shift fork, they fit on if you file the fork a little, but wont select gears as they are in the wrong spot.
Either way,I see a trans removal and rebuild in your immediate future.
Get Mac Van Pelts book "the ins and outs of early Ford transmissions" every question is well answered in it.

  7. I did compare the forks to the stock B 32 trans and the 2-3 forks piped the same and moved the same distances, I'm going to try the top off my old land trans tomorrow be fore I pull it apart.

Does the 2-3 shifter sleeve have the groove the fork sits in right in the middle of the piece, or is it offset to one end of it? the early ones are in the middle, the later ones (for the br*** syncros)are offset. if you have the offset slider, you need a 91A-7230 fork.its wider, and a different shape. the number is cast right in it .
If your problem is the offset sleeve being backwards..the groove for the fork should be toward the rear of the car.easy to check that first.

  9. It is offset, and I believe it is to the rear, I'll take a pic when I get it apart

  10. This is what I have

If you put the trans in netruel, and the top in netrual,It should line up and drop in.
What I think you have is wrong top.
They have a 3" fork,They were first out in 39 cars, and trucks with open drive to 1951. They are very hard to find check around and ebay.Your trans is OK not backwards.

  12. My buddy had 2 double detent tops with 3 inch 2-3 forks, he sold me a perfect one for 100 clams, and now we have 2nd gear!
Thanks everyone, once again the HAMB makes hot rodding a little easier!

    Alright!!

was pretty sure it was the wrong top.

100 bucks is cheap.. the fork itself is usually dearer than that, they are being reproduced too..About $250 for just the fork!

We reproduced the 91A-7230 second/high fork. They retail for $175.00. You still got a nice deal for the tower complete with the right forks at $100.00. If there still any issues with the trans you can buy my trans book to figure it out. We stock the parts.
