My wife and i have busted our ***es all week long sanding and painting the 53 Chevy PU that we just bought. Show is tomorrow (july 16) and it is late and we find out that the shifter is stuck in gear. Could someone tell me how to get it out of gear. Do i need to take the top cover of the ****** off. Need to know before tomorrow morning. Thanks in advance
i think you have to get the top off,cus long time ago a truck that i was driving got stuck in reverse, and i took the top off and got it in newtral,i think there are like 3 little boxes and when they lign up is newtral,i hope that helps fred
Got the top off and not sure how to get it in neutral. Anyone else. Will go out and look for the boxes. Thanks
I don't see three boxes. I ***ume that i need to move the gears in the gear box and not mess with the top cover. Service manual tells to make sure in neutral but doesn't tell how. Thanks matt
is it on a incline? if it is try pushing it forward alittle.... it worked when my truck was stuck in park
No incline. The shifter it's self seems to be stuck in gear. Doesn't matter if clutch is pressed in or not, doesn't want to budge out of gear. Truck will roll when clutch is pressed just won't shift out of gear. I have the top cover off and still just as confused as before. I am sure this is a simple fix.... its just that i don't know how. Thanks matt
Watch where you put your fingers or you could loose some!! But you probably need to move a syncro slider manually as it's turnig a bit. I'd jack up a wheel so I could turn it slowely and with not much weight on te gears...safer that way when working around a coffee grinder! I haven't had that particular trans apart but I've had a lot apart and they all have shifter forks that move "sliders" that engage gears or engage syncronizers that engage gears. Your's probably has three forks in the "top" If you can put the shift lever in the top in neutral and compare where the forks are relative to the "sliders" you may be able to figure out which one or ones need to be moved so they will line up with the forks. Some times people have taken te top off and when putting it back got one of the forks next to the "groove" in the "slider" instead of it the groove and that lets that gear engage whenever it feels like it, jambing up the works. If your truck will roll with the clutch in, it doesn't sound like it's jambed in more than one gear though. Can you "go through the gears" with the shift lever with the top off the trans? maybe one of the spring loaded detent balls is froze up, needing lube... Digicam? Pictures ? Hope that helped some at least...
the "three boxes" are the slots that the shift lever fits into in the top cover...you see them when you pull the shift lever out of the top cover, not when you pull the top cover off the ******. To get the ****** into neutral with the top cover off, you'll need to get the low gear and 3-4 shift sleeves centered, and get the reverse gear lever in the neutral position. And then you'll need to get the top cover into neutral too. First do the top cover, see if that is what was stuck, then get the ****** itself into neutral so the cover will fit over it properly. this picture shows the 57 truck ******, the insides should be the same, although the output shaft is probably different.
if you had it in gear when you took out the shifter you can put it back in the wrong spot so you'll have to mess around with dropping the shifter handle back in as though it was in a gear, you just have to find out which one it was, no big deal if thats all it is and about 3 minutes of ****ing around to find the right spot, if thats what is wrong
Took it all apart friday night. Still wasn't sure how to get the gears in N and then line up the top cover. Had a buddy stop over Sat morning and within a few minutes was back in action. Really appericate all your guys help. Made it to the show and got a lot of looks. Thanks again matt
