Thanks,everyone for the history lesson.I wasnt even an impure thought until the early 70's ,so i needed to hear it from someone who actually saw it.

Hi guys...

I agree with one of the guys here who said...."screw the rules n do what you want"...

The OEM's moved primarily to 14 inch diameter tires and rims in 1957 and in 1961 then they moved the whitewalls to about 1 inch up in the sidewall. It was more of a design trend. The whitewall widths varied from brand to brand. There were a very few exceptions....but like I said, if you like em and want em on your 1974 whatever or 2005 Tahoe, do it!

The second set of tires put on the car by the owner in about '63 or '64 which is about as long as a pos OEM bias ply tire would last, would be skinny whitewalls because sknny whites were anticipated ever since GM put them on their Autorama cars in '53 and they had baan available to buy since '58 and if you bought a '62 or later car and asked for whitewalls, skinny whites was what you got because the last year manufacturers put wide whites on new cars was '61.
(Yea, except for Tempest and a couple of other odd cars still got WWWs in '62)

If you want to blow half your upholstery budget on WWW's go ahead, but it wouldn't have happened in '62.
From '62 on, new SETS of ww tires were skinny. About the only time guys still bought WWW's was to replace one blow out in a set of older WWW's or they were already in the "restorer mind" and wanted it to look original forever.
By '63 WWW's were getting as hard to find, in stock at a tire store, as they are today.

Remember, "nostalgia" and "doing it just like they did back then" car building didn't start till the 80's. The tradition in the '60's, hell, up till the 80's was to move on to, or better yet, start the next trend, not go back to old already been dones.
