Yup, need an old church key. Use the bottle opener end with duct tape loosely wrapped around it, catch the side under the drip rail and carefully start easing it out ward. Start ay the windshield end, be slow and carefull so as to not dent the stainless. Once it is started it comes off easilly.
Yup I followed these instructions exactly when trying to remove the stainless drip rail from my 67 Imperial. CAREFULLY took my taped church key ,eased it under the molding CAREFULLY pried up on the molding and proceeded to F#ck it up.
I've seen it done on other cars where the metal edge was ground back and the edge fuse welded together tying all the steel sections together before being lead wiped.
Did it to a Mini in the UK, just what mgtstumpy said, but went with cheap plastic filler, no money or thoughts of lead!!! I was 17!!!! Would work on 57/58 Ford.
I think the body lines wouldn't look right on the roof with the drip edge removed . The rounder tops like the shoebox can get away with the drip edge removed but the later 50's Fords just don't look good with them removed . I have a 55 Ford and thought about removing them but it was too much work and I didn't think it would look right either . In the end it's your car so you can do what you want to it ! BUT just remember when it's gone , it's gone ! Just my opinion . Retro Jim
I think the "too much work," took over before you got to what it would look like. To each his own. It probably is a lot of work but if you want to do it, go for it. None of us would know what a chopped top would look like if it was too much work.Keep us posted.
So what did you decide? Rather than removing them, check out McPhails 56 chevy. He folded the driprail over and contoured it into the body. Awesome look! I have considered it for my 58 also.
