There is this 1940 olds for sale here in town that I was looking at buying. What is a good price for one of these. It has a new interior, straight 6, 3 on the tree, wide whites and there is no visible rust. Lokks like a older restoration. I also think it has been converted to 12 volt. The guy is asking 5 grand for it. I am going to try and post a picture
$5000 is probably reasonable for a driver; my Old Cars Price Guide Magazine says around $6200 for a series 60 or 70 (both 6-cyl) 4-door sedan in #3 condition (average). Buy it only if you can see yourself attached to it for a long time, 4-doors are tough to sell if you should change your mind later -
Its true, buy it if you like it enough to have it for a while. If its not what your looking for dont just go for the 1st good deal. More doors are harder to get rid of, youll have to find someone that is looking just for that. But if you can see yourself with it for the long haul , ****** it up!
I like it, it's a hell of a lot better deal than buying a field car for $200 and trying to fix it from the ground up. I don't think being a four door is that big of a deal because you're buying it cheap enough. Chrome looks nice, paint should buff out, nice interior, runs and drives. You could buy this and be cruising this weekend, instead of in 2 years when a big project would get finished. If I had this car, I'd add some teardrop fender skirts to it, lower it a bunch with a rake toward the back, hide some kind of radio in it and cruise!
thats what i had in mind. drop it about 8 inches in the back 6 in the front. add some skirts and a sunvisor. this would make a great bomb car. being a 4 door dont really bother me since my buick is also a 4 door. 4 doors are kinda good to have when your hauling the kids around
Four doors are coming into their own, because they are more affordable and easier to find. If you buy a project, your looking at 2 year build time (in most cases) and probably alot more than five grand AND You could be cruising this car this week-end! The BIG question is..............do you like it??? If you like it and you feel it's worth it, buy it. Never buy something that you DON'T like. my two cents. -slacker
Sounds just like me! I bought this '40 Chrysler as a runner-driver for $1650, gave it a paint job, skirts, visor, a few bits of chrome, etc, and all finished up and crusing I've got about $4500 in it, including what I paid. If you wanted to build up a big fat motor, put some wide meats on the back and really hot-rod it out, then the four door would look pretty gay. But lowered with skirts and a visor, and using all the chrome and stuff, this would be a really cl***y ride. Here's a pic of my '40, got everything I want except the lowering so far.
wat too much imho. buy it, change it, swap motor, trans, rear, end up with alot of money in a car that is still a more door. I love the early fourties, but there are alot of em out there for alot less than that. I would think about it, wouldn't you rather have a coupe? can get 5 people in it comfortably, and resale when you are ready to moe on is alot better. A friend has a 40 pontiac more door that he has been trying to get rid of for years, but wants too much. Just not a big demand for em. thats just my 2 cents, you asked for opinions....
I don't think he has any intentions of changing the running gear. He just wants to buy the car, add some skirts, a visor, a good lowering with a rear rake, and drive it. I don't think it's a bad price. Priced out nice driver coupes lately?
I have a 40 model 60 series coupe and a buddy has a 37 four door similar to what you are looking at. It has a 3" chop and a nova front end and is a very nice looking car. The price sounds reasonable if the car is in good shape, look closely at the metal trim, grill, tailight housings, hood ornament and such. Any of these parts are unique to the Olds and can be difficult (expensive) to obtain. Look at the body mounts in the corners front and rear and the rear pan just inside the trunk as these are the most common rust areas on these models. If it is in good shape then I would say it is a fair deal. But then I am a little biased. Good Luck, Steve
IF you like it and have the ca$h...BUY IT. If you think you can turn it for a profit........don't think so....... As said before.........4 doors are at the bottom of the pile.......for most folks.....so the price and the demand for them is way behind 1) convertibles, 2) coupes, and then 3) 2 door sedans. Most have been used up as parts cars..... I happen to like some 4 doors.........and would like to own a 40 Ford 4 door.....or a 32 Ford 4 door.....even a 33-34 Ford 4 door....... If you like it.....just BUY IT........ but plan on it being in the family....for a long, long time.......
