If it makes you feel better, I had the exact same question. I'd rather ask a supposedly 'stupid' question than burn up a bearing or build this ****er a second time.
The only stupid questions are those not asked.

I've greased sealed bearings for the last 40 years. You can pop the seals out of most of them, grease them and put the seals back in.

You shouldn't have to do anything to them unless the grease in the bearing is old enough to be caked up though.

I spec bearings sealed on one side. Advantage... double seal on the outside of the bearing (with the stock axle seal in place) and allows lube to enter on the back side.

That isn't going to work on a 9" rear end, as the axle seal goes in first, then the bearing.

The only "dumb" question....is the one you already know the answer to..... Always ask...Smarter to find out,,,before acting...........

I've told this before but in college I'd never hesitate to ask the professor a question, often very basic about the subject he was lecturing on, that I didn't understand ...

and for some odd reason I got the reputation for being smart.. For asking questions !!!???

Well I guess it is smart to ask questions when you don't understand something.
