Can a truck be used like a truck with a 4-link?

Getting going on the 58 Dodge D100 again and my rear leaf springs and U-shackles are a mess. Rather than piecing it all back together again I am exploring my options some before making a move in any given direction. My question is: is there any reason a 1/2 ton truck can't be used as a 1/2 ton truck from time to time with a triangulated 4-link and coilovers? Would I be better served to just find some junkyard leaf springs and fab up some new hangers? Any insight is appreciated.

I've done several fully bagged 1 tons that are 4-linked. Did one that was used to pull a 27,000# buldozer....so 1/2 no problem....unless you don't know what your doing.

  3. Yep. X2. So long as quality parts are used and put together the right way

The mid 60's Chevy Trucks were a 4 link and coil design. They seemed to do OK. :)
As stated above quality parts and quality work will be just fine.

Drop by a truck dealer, I'm talking large and take a look at some of the bagged rear axle setups on those. Triangulated locaters, track bars, look familiar? Super heavy duty for sure but the principle is still the same.

They were a 2-link, trailing-arm arrangement. Same design is used in NASCAR, to this day.

    4-link, A-OK for towing.

My 2010 Dodge has a factory 4 link with coil springs in the rear!
