I think those rear ends were also used in standard shift 49-51 Mercury cars which came in 3.92; 4.27.
Dana 41 & 44 rear axles came in a several different combos for different applications. The F1 had 4.27:1 and 3.73:1 in the 48 thru 49 then 3.92:1 beginning in 1950. The 48 thru 49 were Dana 41 then the Dana 44 came in with the 50 models. The spring pads on the axle housings are different between the Merc & F1 but I've heard the mod from one to the other is not a difficult task if need be. The Mercury cars with automatics had the tallest ratio that was available for these but I think they were all in the Dana 44 carrier diameter so a person would have to use the Dana 44 in the earlier pickups to get the 3.31:1 or 3.54:1 ratios but it's a bolt in swap if the engine could pull it. Maybe with a granny gear 4-speed you could pull a 3.31: 1 I don't know. First you'd have to find one. I don't imagine there are too many Mercs around with them anymore. Kerby
