I pulled this motor out of a 59 merc It looks very very original ( I don't think it's ever been apart ) the bore measures around 3.85 No oversize marks on piston The motor is stuck but I see no visible external damage and it has oil in it , and it is not watery - light rust in the cylinders - I don't think I'll have a problem freeing it up. OK so do you tinkh this is a 312 or just an over borred 292? It cleaned up nice I wire brushed the cylinders & pistons , then sprayed them down with Kroil - I ****oned it back up for now. I don't want to tear it down any farther untill I'm closer to being ready for it. ( probablly years ) I forgot to write down the casting #.
Thanks . Looks like if I wanna know for sure I 'm gonna have to pul the pan. Damn ... There goes my easy id!
Pull the bell housing and look at the crank flange. Description of 312 id on John Mummert's site referenced above. Casting numbers won't help on a Y as same castings were used for both 292 and 312. My block was originally 292 but has 312 crank.
casting numbers dont tell between 292 and 312 is my understanding you are goin to have to pull the pan or check the back of the crank
