This is a 5-day auction with the proceeds benefiting the HAMB.
I always thought those were high school lettermen jackets...weren't bomber jackets insulated brown leather jackets worn in those cold bomber airplanes in WW2?
You're right. There are bomber jackets like you descibed with sheepskin lining, lined and un-lined flight jackets and varsity jackets. The picture is of a varsity jacket.
Fashion Terminology 101? Nice jacket, but we only have two seasons in central Texas, summer and January.
The jacket in the picture was called a "Letterman's Jacket" back in the 50s. I remember seeing the sheep skin jackets and bib overall style trousers in war surplus stores. They had piles of them and even back then they were a tad pricy. To me a "Bomber Jacket" is all leather and waist cut. As worn by Frank Sinatra in Von Ryan's Express. In the late 1980s the Air Force brought back the all leather flight jacket for air crew members. I was working at Homestead AFB at the time and when our F16 pilots got their issue the Wing Commander had the AC in the Officer's Club turned way down and they partied hard. Didn't see them much after that.
I think a bomber can be both waist cut and 3/4 length, but a flight jacket is only waist cut. Frank's wearing a flight jacket. http://www.superstock.com/stock-photos-images/252-188
Worse in Houston. That's what made my mind up. Of course, I guess I could be a poser like some people I see wearing them when the temp drops to 65*.
