After reading mopar mans story of that hemi find I started think that I just don’t show this car off enough. Since I’ve been building my 1929 coupe I’ve parked this on the garage, covered it up and I haven’t even started it in almost a year. So maybe I’ll dig it out and more it to the other side of the garage.

My little story go like this, one day I was driving down the steer looking for cars in drive ways, we don’t have barns in the part of L.A. I live in, anyway I roll pasted this 1964 Dodge 2 door post just sitting there in the driveway, flat tires and tied to the ground by spider webs. It was a perfect car for me as I had always wanted to build a MAX WEDGE Clone, I knock on the door, I child answers and say it’s his uncles car and not for sale not now not ever. after driving by it for a few years and stop again and again and then one the “uncle” answers the door, I start talking him up, still not for sale, we become friends, he was an old guy, sick with COPD and not doing well, I spent many lunch hours visiting him as he lover talking about old mopars and hot rods, every time I had spare cash I’d hit him ups to sell me the car.. then out of the blue one day he said yes. <O:p></O:p>
Just about every one without a clue calls an old dodge or plymouth 2 door post car a max wedge as so did this guy, I wound up buying the car almost sight unseen before I bought it I had never opened up the hood or ran the vin tag. I just knew this was a good old stock dodge with factory black paint and primer front fenders. I would have been just fine with a 6cyl and 3 on the tree.
I showed up the next day with cash and a trailer, I popped the hood and low and behold a big block was sitting under the hood. Bob was the 2nd owner of the car, he bought it in 1972 with only 1400 miles on, when he sold it to be it only had and still has 31K miles. He comes to tell me that this car was just a local street racer from Mr. Norms Grand Spalding Dodge. He also told me to come by in a few days and there will be something waiting for my on the side of the garage. When I came back there was a couple boxes of parts, including a set of aluminum bumper brackets, some Ram’s Horn manifolds and get this… I pair of aluminum front fenders, what this gut had stashed was an original aluminum super stock Dodge Max Wedge
I won’t bore you with the rest of the long story and I’ll let the photos do the rest of the talking but I do have to say I am the luckiest bastard on the planet. What I have now is a well documented factory dodge super stock, this poor car was hidden away in his garage until one day it was moved outside and forgotten about, <O:pSince I got it all I had to do was replace the exhaust, paint the motor and clean up the interior… <O:p></O:p>
I hope you enjoy my little treasure.<O:p</O:p

by the way, the words "do not touch" were painted on there when the car was new in 1964

Those things are just so very cool. Wonder how many people back then were fooled at a red light by a car that looked like Grandma should be driving it ?:D Ultimate sleeper, and great story.

You shoulda left the bumper hitch on for effect. :D

YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO HATE ME WHEN I TELL YOU THIS!
I have owned the factory lightweight for almost 4 years iduring that time span i have only put about 15 miles on it...

this car has 4:56 rearend with 490 ft pounds of torque, they only made 43 of these and there are only 21 accounted for. this car was ordered with a paded dash, whitewall tires and dog dish hubcaps which makes it a 1 of 1 car... as much as i would love to drive it I live in Los Angeles where the fellows with their lawn mowers in the back of their truck are not the bes drivers, there is no way i would risk taking it out on the city streets.. when i did feel the need to drive something i would hop into one of my other big block dodges, i do my best to take it to as many local shows as i can so others can enjoy it as i do.

When I was 19 me & my dad pulled up at my aunts house. The kid next door drove up in a new max wedge Dodge like the one shown. My aunt tells us that she wouldnt own a Dodge, that car had idled that way since he bought it a month ago. I told her is was a Ramcharger & supposed to idle like that. My aunt said "dont be rediculous, you dont buy a new car that idles like that ". To which I shut the hell up knowing this was an arguement I couldnt win. They were the most radical sounding car Ive ever heard

I remember reading an article in one of the old hot rod magazines in the early 60's where they were drive testing a super stock Dodge. This one had a hemi and Dodge van seats with no carpeting or any other weight contributing parts on it.........the car was made to do one thing.

The funniest part of the article was when they said they stopped at a drive in restaurant for lunch and they put their drinks on the glove compartment door and it was too thin to support them. Then, when the curb waitress put their tray on the plexiglass side window it pulled it out of the track. :D

The tricks the factories were pulling back then to win were amazing. What a great time in American car history.

While I do understand that....it's still ashame to let them sit. I just rebuilt #33 of 300 2000 Cobra R's that was damaged in the tornado last year and finding original NOS parts was a nightmare but I got lucky...I personally put a couple hundred miles on it last week to meet the owner at a show and it's great to drive a factory built race car. I also own a '69 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II Dan Gurney Special...it's the long nose car built by Holman & Moody and parts are flat out made of unobtanium...I drove it quite a bit before finding some cowl rust and it now sits until I get chance to repair it but it is the 3rd car sold to the public in the production run and one of only 16 currently documented in the registry to still exist....while I may murder someone if they hit me in it, I just can't have it and not drive it. So I understand where your head is....I would just have to find some safe place to at least drive it a little...but I'm with you in that I sure as hell wouldn't drive it anywhere near L.A.!!

Back in my street racing days (mid '70's), I had a '65 Malibu SS running a 454, 4 speed and 4:88's. I had gone out to Canoga Park looking for a race at midnight. I couldn't find any action so I headed back to Van Nuys. As I'm driving down Winnetka towards Sherman Way, I see a '62 Plymouth Savoy making a U-turn, then turn left (E/B) on Sherman Way. The Savoy has chrome wheels with slicks on back and the front has "pizza cutter" Centerlines. The car is refrigerator white. I make a left turn on Sherman Way to catch this guy. The next signal is red and we meet.

The guy in the Savoy rev's his engine while I fumble for my wallet. I wave my wallet at the guy and motion forward. He sees my wallet but waves me off. Disappointed, I put my wallet back in my pants as the signal turns green. I pull away from the signal when all of a sudden, the Savoy jumps on it. He screams by me and I figure, WTF and floor it. I can't catch him till the next light, but he's turning left anyway. He waves goodbye and figure I'll never see the car again.

2 years later, my new neighbor wants me to go with him to see his cousin. He said his cousin is into racing. We pull into the driveway and his cousin opens the garage. Here sits the same white Savoy! I ask him if he remembers a dark green Chevelle on Sherman Way trying to race him one night? He said yes, but doesn't race for money. I look at the car and told him it sure looked like a "Ramcharger". He said it was an original "Ramcharger"! I was amazed.

When I quit street racing, I started going to LACR and saw that Savoy run many times. ...

Mine is steel and a clone. I know because I made it but it is a 426 MAX wedge. Have now put on 40,000 miles since doing it in 2000. Love every second I drive it.

Do you still have the hitch, I wanted to install one for towing my senior dragster on a trailer to the airport drags. It is powered by a 246 cube (.156 oversize) 1962 SLANT SIX.
A vintage 426 towing a vintage 246 seemed like a good idea to me.

While I do understand some cars are just too valuable to risk damaging by playing in traffic, I don't think I could ever own one. I guess everyone is different, otherwise there would not be collectors who own museum pieces, but to me cars are made to drive.

My ex BIL is one of those, he has a 64 Vette that he has owned since it was almost new and he NEVER drives it. The car has 40,000 miles on it and it just sits under a cover in the garage. When I was married to his Sister I would urge him to get it out and enjoy it, but he said it is worth too much money. So he will die some day and his kids will sell it, and he could have been having fun with it all along.

Not busting the OP chops, he evidently is happy with owning it for what it is, but give me a car with road rash and scratches anytime. :D

While I also believe cars are meant to be driven, given the rarity of this Max Wedge, I'd treat it like the OP or maybe show it in an automotive museum. Those were race cars in old peoples clothing. Chances are the average person wouldn't have it for long. YouTube is full of "wanna be racers" wrecking cars that got away from them. Just because you've driven 100MPH in a daily, doesn't make you racer.
