Hello again all, I just picked up a complete Fenton dual carb set-up for my 50 Chevy, but the only problem is there are no instructions on how to put the linkage, chokes, etc...together. I am not stupid, I can figure out most of this ****, but if I had the direcions, it would make life much easier. I will be willing to recieve: fax, copied pics, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, smoke signals, pretty much anything that will make this relatively simple job idiot proof. 'Cause God knows I'm a freakin' idioit!!!!! thanks again!!!
I'm not aware of there being any instructions, but if there are, Patrick's would have them as they make and sell the new Fenton intakes. seems to me I've seen linkage kits for sale on Ebay recently. Otherwise, if the carb spacing is the same between your intake and an Offy intake, you should be able to use the Offy linkage kit.
I have the linkage kit, but I'm not sure on how it all fits together. I am just an dumb Polack trying to put together this tinker toy set of linkage + lines. I would guess that the Fenton instructions might have a simple guide on how to sync up the carbs or at least a general guide to get them in the ballpark.
What specifically are you trying to use for carbs? Are they identical? Is this intake a new one, or a vintage one? if vintage, does it have the square or curved ends? Have you determined if the stock linkage from the bellcrank to the carb will work as is? Are you also using Fenton headers? Have you bolted up the intake and exhaust yet? What ARE you using for linkage? You will need to bolt up the manifolds and bolt on the carbs before you can do anything about your linkage. This may help... http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Dual1barrelcarbs.htm There is also an article on setting up multiple Rochesters on the Inliners.org website in there tech tips section on the left sidebar, not the tech tips in the forum... You'll need one of these... http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Uni-Syn-Carb-Synchronizing-Tool,267.html You only need to choke one carb. This is not a weekend project for a rookie, Polish or otherwise , so don't be getting into a hurry...
You've got some work to do before worrying about hooking up the linkage. First you should set up each carb individually using a vacuum gauge. I block off one port making absolutely sure there are no vacuum leaks so that there is only one carb on the manifold. I also prefer to disconnect and plug the vacuum advance. Adjust the idle mixture screws until you achieve the highest vacuum with smooth idle on that one carb. Swap carbs and repeat. When both are done install the second carb (still no linkage)so that now both are mounted. Get yourself a Uni-Syn or other air flow balancing device and measure/balance the airflow to each carb. Do this while also using the vacuum gauge to achieve balanced air intake to each carb along with the highest vacuum. Now hook up your linkage, leave stops loose and repeat. When you achieve balance/highest vacuum again, tighten down the stops. Block off vacuum advance port on rear carb and run distributor advance to front carb only. Should be good to go. Terry
Patrick has a sheet on installation. The Fenton carb spacing is wider by 1" or so, so the offy linkage wont work. There is also a separate sheet and kit (bracket, rod, spring, bolts) for the throttle rod link (from bell crank to intake actuator rod) if you are not using your stock rod. I may have it here in the garage, otherwise, Patrick has them and can send you one.
Here's a picture of a repop Fenton intake and the linkage that came with it. Personally I don't believe a "floating linkage" does a very good job of simultaneous actuation and think a pivoting rod is necessary so I made what is in the second picture to accomplish this.
The photo on the left above is pretty much what did or still comes with the Offy intake.Very simple and depending on how fussy you are it can be made to work well enough to get the vehicle on the road. But the photo on the right is a far better linkage.
Bolting everything together is pretty straight forward. Adjusting & dialing in the carbs is a different matter all together. This tech tip should help out if you are running Rochesters. http://www.inliners.org/tech/tech4.html There is also a new retro fit kit that allows you to bolt Zenith carbs to the Fenton intake. Those are the stock air filters for old GM trucks . Joe can prolly help you find some . This is a good thread .
