We are repairing a set of '48 Pontiac rear fenders and the owner has a little less than a pint of the left over paint from a re-paint in early 60's. My question is if we reapair the fenders and apply a base coat that matches to the best of our ability and then apply a urethane clear could the old lacquer be applied over the clear if the owner wanted a closer match?
I doubt the original paint would match the same color that has been exposed for 30+ years. One of those high tech lazer scanner gizmos should be able to get a closer color match.
This is a tricky proposition. First, I doubt the finish (surface/shine) of the urethane clear will match the 60's repaint. Second, that finish alone will (or rather could) throw off the color match. As Unkl Ian said, the original paint probably won't match anyway. I would #1) forget the idea of using the laquer - you don't have enough anyway; #2) make sure the owner understands the circimstances; & #3) do a test panel untill you get the closest match you can. HTH, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" Why do they call it reckless driving if it causes wrecks?
Thinking about it further, you'd probably be better off using single stage, & maybe even adding a touch of flattening agent to prevent too much shine (if needed). Again: test panel..... ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" Easy on the Giggle Cream!
WOW! I'm finished more of my projects than I thought! ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" There is no problem that cannot be solved with the right application of high explosives.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from the lacquer. It's time has p***ed. The lacquer won't crack instantly but in a period of time it will. Any paint let over fron the 60's would be very scarey. Because it's a partial can, it's been exposed to air. That started the degredation a long time ago. Urethane is so good, there's no reason to use anything else. If the 48 is worth anything, it's worth a good paint job at some time. I'd try the color match gun also. Good luck.
Hey, Even if the lacquer were half its age, putting lacquer over urethane would be a bad move at best. Different solvents, different products, they don't go together.
yes definitley, laquer over urethane will produce an alligator skin lookin deal. the two do NOT mix. my best advice is to go with urethane all the way, u cant beat it, and i bet money that someone with experience could match it damn close if not perfect to original.
I agree with wfo guy on this one, lacquer will cause you more problems than it's worth....especially 30 year old lacquer (I'm suprised that it's still liquid) Again, good call -slacker
never ever put lacquer over urethane ... it will wrinkle , lift , or both ... it will not last ..... just use urethane ...
stupid question but why not just use laquer again??? i can still get it in ppg here in town ... just bought some for a 81 granada....
thanks for the help guys. The fenders are going to be done in all lacquer by the owner. He wants the car all lacquer and no urethane. I was trying to help the man that owns the car and to use the fenders as teaching aids for the school but we only shoot more modern finishes so I just wanted to know if he shot the lacquer at a later date if it would be a problem. Thanks again Brick
