The rear end in my dad's '64 Cadillac went up to heaven yesterday. We were hoping it was just the carrier bearing, but no such luck - it's fine. Each wheel will turn smoothly by itself but when you hold one wheel steady, the other will not turn. We are going to pull the center section out tonight to see just what happened. Judging by the sounds, we're expecting a grisly scene - probably a dropped spider gear or worse.

What other center sections will interchange with this one? It's a big carrier, held into the axle case by 14 bolts. We're probably going to scour the yards for something usable this weekend and want to get there prepared. Thank you.

Unfortunately, you are pretty much boned, unless they have caddys your same year range. The real downer is they are a riveted unit.

    The hollander manual states:

    58-62 Cadillac - all - interchange #700
    63-64 Cadillac - Commercial Chassis, Series 75 - interchange #700
63-64 Cadillac - all except Commercial Chassis, Series 75 (yours) - interchange #719
    65 Cadillac - Commercial, Series 75 - interchange #700
    65 Cadillac - all except Commercial Chassis, Series 75 - interchange #840

I looked and Buick, Pontiac, Olds will not work. They are their own animal.

The other thing you need to know is that the AC cars, non AC, and CC,75 series cars are likely geared differently as well. In a 61-62 a non AC car has 2.94 gears and AC car has 3.21, and 3.77 for the CC,75.

If you want the proper gearing, it's probable that you will need to find a 63-64 car that matches your AC or Non-AC setup as yours doesn't appear interchangeable with any of the others. If you had a CC,75 series you would have more options. We've discussed it a bit on the 61-62 forum and its enough to really annoy somebody looking for a definite answer. Alright then? Clear as mud! :D

I'm at the point to where if I come across a good rear carrier, I feel compelled to hoard it for a rainy day, based on our discussions.

That list of possibilities reads a lot like the laundry list of driveshafts, for 57 Fords !

I hope you find what you need !!!!

WOW that sucks. :D Thank you very much for the thorough answer. I was kinda worried about that. So... does anyone have a spare '63/64 Cad (with a/c) diff laying around? lol

My 67 caddy commercial chassis also has the rear with the bolt in center section, not sure why it would not interchange? Possibly the center section is the same and the housings have different mounting points.
