I have to be honest, I cannot see well on a rainy night. I'd like to upgrade the 4 headlamp system on a '65 T-Bird. I have used H-4 motorcycle headlights on a couple of cars but never did this with a 4 headlamp system. I don't want something dumb like HIDs, just something whiter and brighter but not blinding. Has someone just added relays?
I had a set of Cibie Halogens in a 4 headlamp car I used for road rallies back inthe 70's. Don't even know if they are still availabel these were Eurostyle withthe seperate bulbs. Had 55w/70 lows and 100w highs. The highs were basically useless on the road as they were too bright. Hella still lists theie 5 3/4 inch rounds. http://www.myhellalights.com/index....lamps/vision-plus-5-75in-conversion-headlamp/
I allways uppgrade them with 4 H-4 and have high beam on all 4. You have to mount a relay and switch the relay with the light switch otherwise the lights go out in highbeam after a short while works god enough for swedish winter darknes. Bosch have H-4 with rounded glas
I once traded a '48 hevy truck project for a '58 chevy truck project. I have not gotten to the electrical but i did upgrade to 4 headlights from 2
the headlights in my 59 chevy truck are really nice, it's a 4 headlight system with halogen bulbs and a 70s Chevy 10SI alternator. Big difference between the truck and your car would be the height of the headlights above the road. Also I've noticed that I don't see as well at night in the rain as I used to, just because I'm getting old. The eyes just don't work as well.
Both Hella and Bosch conversion lights are still available. I've used Hella extensively and always gotten good performance out of them. Do use a relay for both high and low beam. squirrel, that happens with halogens in the rain, the "blue" headlights are worse, something to do with reflection, rarefaction, deflection...all that Some manufacturers are making some nicer bulbs for the small 4 set up, you may have to special order them though, not alot of call for them
Yes, use the relays for sure!! I think I almost killed myself returning home on the highway last night at midnight!! The Hellas work well, but not so good when the headlight circuit breaker goes. Does anyone know why it resets itself? I waited on the side of the highway for a few minutes and the lights came on again so I drove home on low beam and all was fine. Should I be replacing my headlight switch now as well as installing relays even though the switch appears to be working fine again?
have a 66 bird put in just normal halagen bulbs they work well. if your bird still has the old standard bulbs in it . anything will be a improvement
Circuit breakers that "come back on" are self-resettable due to a bi-metal conductor that opens when it reaches a certain temperature and closes when it cools. Ray
I bought a set of vintage lucas headlights and did a H-4 conversion on them, did the relays and all that stuff, they are kinda dim on regular, (which I am okay with as it looks good) but they look great on high until the bulb got so hot that it cracked my og lucas lense... yea, I cried...
Thanks Ray. By the way, are there any others out there other than the Hellas that work well? I still have 59 pontiac that need them
