I'm thinking of having a friend (who's a more experienced welder than I) help me fabricate my own frame for the Model A pickup I plan to build. I searched and have found plenty of old posts on the welding/fabrication of frames, but none with actual dimensions, that I can see. Looks like at some point, the parallel rails from the rear have a small "kink" in them, and they taper or sweep narrower to the front crossmember. Is this typical, or can you just make a plain rectangular frame? I suppose I should mention that I plan to channel the cab about the height of the frame rails, if that makes any difference. Also (sorry for all the ??'s), is 4" kickup/z in the rear enough, or should I go more drastic, like 8" rear, 4" front? (plus 4" dropped axle, so 8" in front as well)? Anyone have one they could take some measurements off of? Thanks in advance!
have fun...building one right now for my 28. theres alot of info here but for the most part its just amatter of getting out there and doing it...i've been net surfing for info for 3 weeks now and finally decided there was no exact measuremnts you need except for your own tape measure.
I could not have said that better. gather all your parts up and mock them up on the floor at the height and location you like the look and build your frame to connect every thing. As much as i like to plan and draw every part out it ****es even more to cut some thing apart cause you forgot some thing more important or visualy important has to go there.
yeah, I find that since my reckless building of my teenage years has left me, (i'm 28 now...) I tend to over think it all and try and plan out everything. In the end though nothing beats going out there with a vision and just trying to see if the parts will work.
Like the guy said, get out your tape measure. Here's another idea from Har****'s brother (forgot his name ) who built a little RPU/modified a couple of years back - he built a mock frame out of wood 2 x 4's. Its easy to adjust and correct mistakes on. Try out some different kick-ups with the bare body on it. Once you're happy with it, build the real frame out of steel 2 x 4.
