Anybody have some helpful hints on the best way and/or best tools/chemicals to remove a vinyl top off of a hardtop??
Best, or easiest?...cause there's no easy way I have been known to peel em off, then run over the residue with a propane torch and burn the glue/fuzz, then sand off what's left.
Im thinking best and easiest? Just s****e w/heat and a s****er? Maybe use one of those weird plastic type wire wheels on a drill? never did one before, well I should say, I never did one that was actually in this good of shape, usually there half pulled off already and the neighborhood kids take care of it every time they walk by!
ive taken off over 1000 of em.are you gonna replace it or sand and paint?either way use a razer and split it to strips, then pull ,use a razer s****er laid at an angle, skin it like a buck deer.if you like gooey messes go ahead and try solvents.most wont cut the glue, but it s****es pretty easy when it is dry.i used to clean em up in about an hour. good luck
Thanks for the advice. I'm planning on painting after I pull it off, after I deal w/all the unseen rot and rust Im sure I'll find
^^^^^This guy knows his stuff. I've been in the biz myself and would ditto everything he said. For paint, take it down to bare metal with a DA or something after you have it all s****ed down. The glue will eat all the way through to metal, so you don't want to paint over any substrate that's been under vinyl.
Kinda weird, those who have'em hate'em....while i hate that it has been removed from my project....guess it depends what kinda car you buildin anyway.
I hate how the vinyl hides what is really going on underneath...sure they look nice but they secretly hide whats leaking and rusting underneath....the car is a 66 Caddy Deville
