Hello! My machine shop and I are wondering if anything more than the flywheel should be balanced(while balancing engine). It's a 57 olds and an earlier olds b&m. Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks

  2. There shouldn't be anything else. I had the same set up and I don't even remember having the flywheel balanced.

If it where an engine I was doing ..... I would internally balance your 371 crank...
It will take at least a 1x1 inch slug of heavy metal in each end depending on what the rest if your rotating assembly weights
    Most likely a 1x1 and a 1/2 x 1

This way you always use neutral balanced flywheels.....
You may change your mind at some point and get rid of the hydro.....

Art.... That's what we did to yours originally, That's why we could change flywheels like we did

Tony: Sounds like a good idea to internally balance the crank. But if he were to use the hydro, wouldn't he need to neutral balance the hydro flywheel? Want to know as I am in process of bolting 55 Pontiac hydro to Buick 225 V6. (I believe the 225 is internally balanced, that is if an odd firing V6 can be balanced!) Years ago I installed a 54 hydro to a 60 371 engine and had the flywheel counterbalanced per transmission expert.

Early hydros used a neutral balanced flywheel

I would always spin it in the machine....we are dealing with 50+year old parts, that you never know what could have been alterd during its life

Good idea. Will look up the 225 and 287 to see if both are internally balanced. If so the hydro flywheel should be ok, but will have it checked just for sanity.

D2 are you putting that 225 in the Aero? I have a complete stick set up from a 65 225, the flywheel is 50#. and it has a small rectangle machined out of the back but I'm not sure if this was for engine or flywheel balance only as the flywheel is so heavy. They might shake a little but their a really good little engine.

The engine and transmission (which I am going to use one of my other hydros and keep the Pontiac hydro for my 59 Olds) are going in a Renault 4CV and will be mounted in the rear.

I do have a stick flywheel for the 225, along with a flexplate. I guess I can use one of these to see if the V6 is internally balanced. The flywheel and flexplate should be neutral balanced if the engine is indeed internally balanced.

Listen to Ross. He knows the early Olds engine.
