Projects '62 Ford Unibody LSR Truck

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mctim64, Mar 23, 2011.

  1. I use it like a 4 speed because fifth is O/D and is very high. Also an O/D runs on a counter shaft wich takes power, if you want a higher ratio the way to do it is in the rear. Best to run the power straight through the trans. less moving parts.

Just so you know at Boneeville last year I tried fifth just for shits and giggles and he fell flat on his face. Back to forth to pick up speed.

I coast to a stop just cause I can. less wear on the brakes and the engine. There's plenty of room, makes the ride last longer too. ;)

Can't argue with any of that :)

I think its interesting that 5th is so hard to pull.

    Thanks for the info!

  4. Almost nobody uses an OD on the salt. 4speeds still rule. Tex's are the fav until you get into teh SUPER high end stuff like Liberty's and other air shifted wonders!

One needs to remember two things here, one, a BIG Y block is 320 cubic inches,
two, in these classes, the bodies are like a barn.

  6. I want to point out that there is more thinking that goes into gear ratio and tire size than most anything else. Most people are suprised when the hear that I started out with a 4.11:1, They think in LSR you would be running something like a 2.50 or higher. In smaller engine classes you need to find what the engine can pull. For me the magic rpm is 7000, when I find that the engine can pull top gear at that rpm then it's time to step it up.

At Bonneville, with bricks like Pickups and Street Roadsters, you let off the gas and you can be mistaken that your parachute is out. Our first two runs, over 180, the driver swore he felt the chute slow him down.

  8. Thats funny Stan. Stop by for a beer and chat this year.

  9. This weekend I installed an O2 sensor and a A/F ratio gauge, gotta keep up on mixture with how quickly the DA changes. I also installed some Dzus buttons to hold the bed cover down.

I like the factory AM radio! :D

  12. The official broadcast is on AM for the spectators.;) Race info for the crews is via this new fangled technology called a Citizens Band Radio. Way rad shit, it will blow your mind.................

  13. The engine kinda drowns out the radio but it's music to me. ;)

Well you cant have the engine running on the way back to the pits, but you can listen to 1610 AM! The best radio station in the USA that week!!

  15. Bonneville is coming! I just got off work for two weeks and I wish I could leave now. But I do need to get a few things in order and I will be posting pix soon.

Tman, I hear that Tim hit 142. He's squeezing some MPHs out of that thing! Good to see!

  22. Best run was a 142.

We had one other truck, a Chevy in the class running Dart goodies and such that could only hang but not go faster than the original Ford cast iron parts. Plus, we sounded better ;)

  23. Betcha even looked better tooo.........
Now ifn he could get his niece to join him.........

  24. It was a good looking 70 stepside done in red. Nice but didn't stand out as well as Tims. I noticed that the muted colors like Jake and the light yellow on the Vesco liner seem to pop on the salt. The two tone definately helps on both cars as well.

Things got a bit messed up Trent. Sorry I missed the BBQ. We set off on Wednesday and about 80 miles from Vegas the RV took a dump. Got it home and loaded the pick up and set off Friday. But it all worked out. The sidecar raised the 650 gas record from 83 to 118 and the fuel record from 104 to 128. We head home tomorrow. A bunch of happy puppies!

This is what its all about!

  28. cool pic...........

  29. ‎142 mph was our best speed. There was a guy there with a '70 Chevy Stepside in our class that had a Dart block and heads, pro built "Sprintcar" motor that claimed 590 HP that ran 140. We were both staged next to eachother on one run, he went first then me.On that run He ran 136 mph I ran 140. Not bad for 50 year old "Real" Ford iron. ;-)

Here's the first video to be edited, not the fastest run but a pretty good one.

  30. Thought I'd add one of Keith's Y-Block powered coupe, it's running strong too. If my truck was as fast I'd have a record.
