I've often heard the T10's are a little more stout than muncie. Any truth? I found this one not sure of the year. T10-70 3813480? 1970? No shifter or bellhousing and wants 450 which I think should be around $300. Plan on putting a little 283 behind it for fun in a x-frame.
Never seen a T-10 w/a bowtie on it. GENERALLY speaking, unless you find a Super-10 I'd go w/Muncie...which seems to be more durable. I did alot of trans work "in the day"...& you almost always had to replace all the syncros, hubs, & most all gears to get a decent result. They had a bad habit of slipping out of gear under deceleration if the gears we'rent replaced. Not so much w/Muncies. Again, Ive never seen the chevy bowtie on a case...so maybe there's something I don't know.( prolly is ). For my $$'s....it'd have to a diamond for $450.
I've had a few with the bowtie on em. The last was my 63 Impala's original T-10. Anyway, the T-10s are good overall and can handle more than most think, but the Muncie's seem to have a better reputation for strength than the T-10. I've run em both, and never had a failure with either on a street car, most were X frame chevy's too.And i doubt you'd have many issues with a 283 unless you were doing 8K launches with slicks regularly. 400 seems to be the average around here for a good usable T-10. if for daily driving , the t-10 i think is more user friendly . if you are going to abuse it , muncie m-22 .
Had a super T-10 behind the big block buick in my stude, it got hammered on a regular basis. Only thing I ever broke was syncro's from missing gears. I always heard the super T-10's were tougher. Came out of a 79 Z-28.
T-10s were not all the same, so exactly what you are looking at matters a lot. Currently available Richmond T-10 is stronger than a Muncie, but that's not what you asked about. +1 on what Tony said. Most T-10s are plenty strong enough for what it sounds like you are doing.
T10 OR Muncie everyone around here want 750-1000 bucks for them! I really could use a 4 speed for our Bonneville car!
Muncie's were released in '63 to handle the torque of the higher HP engines (409's) as the T10's were starting to get chewed up. Having said that, I run a T10 (bowtie dated 1962) behind my stroked 348. Terry
The transmission that you are looking at appears to be a 1963 T10 out of a Chevy (with the bowtie on it). The early T10's (1957-1963) are ok but the Muncie 4 speed is superior to those in gear design. The Super T10 trumps them both as an all around better unit. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Super T-10 strongest, muncie next, then T-10. Not that it matter with a mild 283 powered street car, not likely to break any of them. And yea, I'd be a happy camper with a chevy T-10 for $300.
